On the PS3, when I finished the quest, "Questioning of Beliefs" for Anders in Act 3, his robe changes to black but it loses his only rune slot.
Is that intended?
What's the benefit from upgrading Ander's robe to black?

Losing a rune slot is probably a bug, though I hadn't heard of that one.
The change of colour was probably meant to symbolise the resolution of some deep inner turmoil within his psyche...but it could just be emo anders been emo. Aesthetics and witty party banter beside, i'm pretty sure that costume changes do nothing (besides give the potentially to be buggy).
(My reasoning stems from the similar thing that can happen with isabela when she changes to her romance-outfit.)

Yeah, that's how I've been doing it on subsequent plays. Same goes for Merrill, though. So I'm a SWF on this play-through.

Yeah its bugged that way. I know its the same if you allow varric to keep the idol piece when bianca gets the extra rune slots he loses the ones in his armour. Once you get the last piece for the final rune slot it suddenly has all 3 back again.

There is no stat difference, just different clothes as characters change. eg romances for fenris get a scarf, merrill has a beautiful set of clothes when you romance her.

Yeah, I really liked Merril's all white outfit on her. It kinda fits, you know? I'd say out of any blood mage you've run into in these two games, your own PC if they're one notwithstanding, she's the most decent one, cause even she understands the dangers/risks and will prevent against them, she even delivers a hell of a line to Anders when she says "I understand that all spirits and demons can be dangerous, I'm sorry you didn't." Hell, she even asks you to kill her if necessary in Act 3, something Varric wrly comments on.

If your playing on pc you can just readd the armor upgrade using the console to get the rune slot back if playing on a console your ****ed;)
