I usually do not mind some collaeral damage with fireballs and such (in fact at upper levela and with all the elemental reaistances I often dorm a fireball centered in myself when the battle has mover to a full melee mess). But collateral damage and suicide is not the same. So, how do I keep my uttely moronic melee companions form charging headlong inside things like Storm of the Century and Grease Fire effects? Because so far my mass battles consist basically on holding the H key and my mage singlehandedly killing everyone with some help form Leliana's bows,

Play around with the tactics menu and make sure your mages don't have any FF AOE spells set for use. Then, when in battle, order them directly cast those spells if and when you want them to. The computer AI really can't be trusted with those spells.

Oh, but I am the mague. I dislike both Morrigan and Wynne, so I am stuck in the mass murderer position.
What I'd like is for my bloody meatshields to attack the guys than leave the death area, instead on entering it themselves to attacke peopel than are diing anyway. But I have to do it manually, with the h key and selecting each warrior and their oponent.

Oh right. In that case, tweak their Behaviours on the tactics menu (top right hand corner). Defensive might work well - in that mode they only attack when attacked or if you specifically order them to. But there are others. Play around.

I just use fireballs and grease/inferno/tempest/blizzard on large mobs of archers and mages.

When you finish DAO, be grateful that the 2 new specs in awakening have non-ffriendly fire powers that do massive damage.

There's no really good way to keep your melee companions from walking into storm of the century without using the hold position command.
If you're worried about your tank getting killed by aoe, then raise their magic resistance with equipment and dweomer runes. Templars, in particular, have access to templar and knight commander armor, which help greatly with magic resistance, and Alistair just happens to be a templar. With the knight commander armor (bought by Faryn in the Frostback Mountains), dweomer runes, a Spellward amulet, and Key to the City, he (or another templar) can be completely immune to magic damage.
