What's your favorite RPG and why?

Mine is probably Fallout: New Vegas or Oblivion
For some reason I find it really easy to play a certain character in these games and while Bioware RPG's are good, I never feel like i'm doing what I want to e.g. in Oblivion I can say no to the Main Quest and pretend its not even happening and go be an assasin while in Dragon Age Origins or NWN (never played BG so I won't comment on it)  I can play as a Warrior or as an Assasin but I still pretty much have to do the main quest I never feel like i'm free to do what I want just play the Main Quest in a certain way.

Mine is the Baldurs Gate Trilogy. But i haven't played Torment yet. ( thats next)

I prefer the tactical party based gameplay to action rpgs myself. Plus i'm a little biased towards old school D&D, being a fan of it going back to the 80's.

Vampire Bloodlines Masquerade with unofficial patch.
The Witcher and Dragon Age are fighting for 2nd place, Mass Effect is 3rd.

All time I would have to go with Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord and all it's sequels.  This series defines what an RPG is.

In November it will be Skyrim.

As of right now, probably KOTOR.

My favorite Role-Playing game is real life. It's incredibly open-world, unbelievably realistic, and nearly every choice you make has a noticable effect, good or bad. The romance scenes could be better, but I don't have freaking chiseled abs like Jacob. Or a girlfriend with a genetically engineered butt.

I'm pretty sure it's just fantasy. I got caught in a landslide, so no escape from reality.

Well if we're talking video game RPGs... I'm going to vote for...
Mass Effect 1. Despite minor flaws, It's really hard to outdo the original.

Mama? I just killed a man.

*Ahem*

Wow. This is a loaded question.

JRPG: FFXII or Legend of the Dragoon...or DQVIII.

WRPG: I think I have to go with TESIV: Oblivion. I've probably spent at least1,000 hours over dozens of characters. It just drew me in better than the competition (heck, even better than Morrowind...though I spent a good 200 hours on that).

MMORPG (Kind of?): Guild Wars.

Action RPG: BG: Dark Alliance 2? Phantasy Star Online? Champions of Norrath? Uh...this one is too hard.

Turn-based Strategy/RPG Hybrid: Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII

Is this an extremely weird coincidence or did you copy my writing format? :D

My personal favorites of all time are both Icewind Dale games (with all Expansions)
I loved playing D&D, but there was always someone in the Party who would do something dumb like set Traps around Camp without telling anyone else in the Party & sometimes you had to deal with petulant DM's who were "playing" against you instead of facilitating a good Game...
the ID series gave me the same PnP feel without any of the negatives.

Torment. Awesome characters, engrossing story, good writing, lots of choice in terms of class/moral outlook of protagonist/influence over companions. Great setting. Poor combat, but totally didn't care. Cried at the end, only time that's ever happened in a computer game. But there's a ridiculous number of contenders for second place: the BG series, Arcanum, Bloodlines, Fallouts 1, 2 & New Vegas, both ME games (though I liked ME2 more for gameplay and sidequests, ME1 probably counts as the better RPG for me), KotOR2, Witcher. Maybe I'm just too easy to please ...

It's usually the ones with a story or characters that really made an impression on me.

The main one being Planescape Torment which is probably the deepest RPG i ever played from a storyline point of view. Has some interesting characters to meet who all have a story to tell if you can drag it out of them in conversation. Haunting musical score and several puzzles to solve for those who enjoy puzzles. It's an RPG that isn't a hack and slash fight every few minutes type affair but relies more on logic and asking the right questions. An older game now graphically but still a classic worth playing if you want to experience a real story. This one will appeal to both RPG fans and fans of point and click adventures.

Persona 3 FES - I'm not a huge fan of JRPG's since i find most of them cliche and boring but this one i was reccomended a few times and finally sat down and played it and i wasn't sorry i did. It takes RPG elements pretty seriously since you are a schoolkid you will go to school Monday to Saturday (They have school 6 days a week in Japan) and you will participate in class. The turn based combat is actually fun and tactical and using your persona never gets old.

Dragon Age Origins: I'm sure the old school would rarther pick Baldur's Gate II but screw you all i'm picking this one XD. Dragon Age Origins made me like the whole swords and dragons style of RPG again at a point where i'd really gone off the idea. I wasn't even excited about the game when it came out but after a friend played it and was ranting about how amazing it is i managed to talk myself into having a look. Everything about this game just pulls me in from the great music to the origin storylines to characters you can love or hate. There are some moments of this game that really stick for me. Listening to Leliana tell stories in camp for example i find myself really glued to listening to her tell me all these legends and Morrigan after you start to befriend her suddenly starts opening up and has this wonderful speech about friendship. I think it's the storyline moments that really make an RPG more than it being open world or anything else.

I'd pick Dragon Age: Origins along with KOTOR. Basically, I only played Bioware games, as well as a few of Obsidian's, which both happen to be continuations of Bioware titles. Yes, I have finished some RPG's made by other developers but not a single one was just as engaging. If there isn't a solid storyline and, most importantly, great interactions with your companions (preferably with romances), then I'm simply not interested. Unfortunately, only Bioware fits the latter requirement, most other RPGs are much more hack n' slash-oriented.
I did give an honest try to Planescape Torment since I heard so much good about that game. But for some reason it seemed like such a drag, and I could not get used to being basically a carbon copy of Frankenstein. Game-breaker, that was.

Of those I played:
Gothic 2 + Expansion (the german original, the english VA was terrible)
I also liked DAO and KOTOR. Witcher 1 was nice except for the combat.
I didn't like oblivion very much. Haven't played Planescape Torment.

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. It just has everything – memorable characters, engaging atmosphere, and a great experience point system which doesn’t encourage you to kill anything that moves. Baldur’s Gate 2 comes in a close second, followed by a controversial Alpha Protocol.

Some of the oldies like Betrayal at Krondor, Stonekeep, and Eye of the Beholder are all on my favourites list, but they’re feeling very dated in aspects other than the graphical department. Still, there’s few things I enjoy more than booting up an old DOS game.

I still haven’t gotten very far in Planescape Torment. Fell sick for almost a month and just never went back to it. Maybe I’ll give it another go, though I was hoping to do Anachronox again next. Why does it seem like nobody mentions Anchronox anymore?
