I've run two mages through DA2 so far, the first was pretty aimless.  I didn't have a plan, I just sort of made it up as I went and ended up FM/BM/Primal/Creation.  The Second playthrough I was more focused but went along the same basic lines but it was much more powerful.

For my third I thought I'd try out SH.  The intial thought I had is a SH/FM build that dips heavily into Primal and lightly into Elemental.  This mage would only activate Healing Aura in times of need.  biowarefans.com/dragon-age-2-talent-builder/#mzcMY1GILpjaVPwhQSckYRmo0dSihurPGw

Spirit Healer:
 - Healing Aura
 - Group Heal (w/ Unity)
 - Revival

Force Mage:
 - Fist of the Maker
 - Telekenetic Burst
 - Pull of the Abyss
 - Gravatic Ring (Gravatic Sphere)
 - Unshakeable

Creation:
 - Heal (Greater Heal)
 - Heroic Aura (Valiant Aura)
 - Haste (Great Haste)

Primal:
 - Everything except Golem's Fist and Dessicate (I would really like Deissicate but thought Strikes Twice would be more useful, could go either way though)

Elemental:
 - Winter's Grasp (Winter's Blast)
 - Cone of Cold (Deep Freeze - would be willing to drop this)

Entropy:
 - Horror

The other build would be SH/FM/Creation/Entropy/Arcane and would keep HA on nearly all the time.  Seems kind of a waste but could be a Crowd Control Beast.  Any list of other useful spells from other trees that can be used with an active HA would be useful.  I'm not really sure how useful some Arcane abilities would be (Barrier, I'ts upgrade, Arcane Shield plus upgrades etc.)  Any adivce here?  It would look something like this: biowarefans.com/dragon-age-2-talent-builder/#m1aVwQPhScYkRmo0dHUtEl1GILpjyT0KOSJ

I suppose there's some utility in the Spirit tree as well with Death Syphon and Dispell magic.  Has anyone played a build like this?  The main appeal to me is that it is completely different from my nuking tendancies and seems it could be a nice change of pace.

Any thoughts/advice would be great.

The judicious use of Healing Aura works well for Spirit Healer builds that also wish to dps. I keep all my sustainable skills in one area of my action bar, so the toggle is easy to access.

Or you could go BM/SH and just have so much health/regen that you are pretty much invincible. And then can sit there resurrecting your zombie companions again and again...

That was one of my (very briefly considered) concepts. Just for those people who enjoy roleplaying/the idea of heavy armoured healers (i.e. clerics), you could have a healer who had loads of constitution and a little bit of strength to equip armour. If you exploit lots of CCCs you shouldn't be too limited damage-wise (but as I can't bear to do anything other than glass-cannon builds I wouldn't do it myself..).
Late game, all those high-end mage armour would actually be a lot more effective armour-wise/in general, but you should be invincible enough to not need to consider the armour-rating

Yes, but is a 100% active HA build viable?  Or...has anyone had fun doing that?

I've heard of HA builds been able to tank the arishok duel (i.e. their health regen was higher than his dps).
Not sure about the 'fun' part though. haha

That's probably more due to the stacking HA bug than anything. I have a hard time believing a SH could tank the Arishok through legit means.

Playing dedicated healer can be fun, just make sure you got a couple offensive skills.

I ran with this build on my current character through nightmare...

http://biowarefans.c...kRmo0dHUEeBCvSy

Since I was running haste, using it became more tactical than previously where anders just spammed it. I waited for second waves or assassins and then hit it on.

Ran heroic aura at all times, swapped in and out of HA. I used horror on people who were beating me up, or to try and pin down assassins for a second. Hex for assassins too.

Crushing prison and horror were used to kill the arishok, he didn't stand much of a chance since both skills pin him down.

Occasionally completed CCC with crushing prison on assassins and such.

Another run through I was completely spirit healer spec, with force mage skills and creation. Was ok, some of the force mage skills can be used while using HA. Glyphs are also fun to use sometimes, but you do feel a bit useless despite being immortal.

Nah, without the bug I tanked the Arishok with minimal kiting.  Use Petrify, Glyph, or Gravitic to lock him down enough to get damage on him and restore all your health.  Chuck on a Heal or Group Heal every once in awhile when I got sloppy, but it wasn't hard.  It mostly just tests your patience more than anything else.

Totally don't mean to self-promote, but if you are looking for Spirit Healer help, I happened to write a guide on them folks which you should check out if you're unsure on how to work on your Spirit Healer.  I love SHs to death.  I ran a FM/SH controller that would just lock down the battlefield...just absolutely hilarious.  I later converted him into a straight up nuker, but that's besides the point...

Well, yeah, through lockdown spells you can avoid damage. I wouldn't really call that tanking him though. My last mage kept him locked down completely with GR, Petrify and Horror and I never took damage.

I did read through your guide, and it's very well done. Thanks for doing it.

Arcane = Shield & bubble whilst Creation = glyphs of paralysis and repulsion... these are not considered attack spells so this build keeps the healing aura up permanently!
Enough points into spirit to get the bonus staff damage and auto-attack your way to victory.

Isn't Healing aura bugged? It's range is apparently much less than what it actually is.
I've been considering to run a more support type mage, but it seems like there isnt much point to it.
Anders is better than Hawke in support simply because he have swift justice and martyr. Haste is the best buff in the game and wit this two talent he can get it running majority of the time.

Then there is the bug with group heal and martyr executable without turning on panacea/vengeance.

And i know people been saying that Healing aura is meant to be switched on and off but it eats 30% of your mana. So every time i want to hit a group heal or revive i would have 30% of my mana dissapear just like that.

The only time this is not an issue is if you constantly run Blood Magic, as you would have a whole mana bar dedicated to sustainables.

I think Healing Aura is bugged with range, but the more concerning one is where HA stacks when you change areas, giving you insta-full Heals.

The only reason why Anders is currently so good-he's-broken is because of the bug not requiring Vengeance to run Martyr.  Otherwise he's mostly identical to Hawke in support.  In terms of just healing, Anders needs Swift Justice to be be able to cast Group Heal at an identical rate as Hawke, while Revival is just a little faster than Hawke's with Swift Justice (but if you need Revival more than once a fight, something's wrong).  I would agree with your sentiment mostly because Hawke is a much better mage, period, than Anders, more DPS and stuff, so leave Anders to do something else.  But if you have a Spirit Healer Hawke (that can also nuke), then Anders can DPS too, and with that he's not too shabby, if only squishy as heck.  Constant Haste + Vengeance + Martyr would boost his DPS like nuts.

Personally I don't use him just because I hate his character, but that's neither here nor there.

You don't...cast spells before you turn on Healing Aura?  Any build, support or no, should be tossing out spells like a madman before needing to turn on HA.  If you're nuking, drop Firestorms, Cones of Cold, Tempests, Chain Lightnings, and then turn on Healing Aura when you need to heal.  If you're playing support, dropping Glyphs, Hexes, Entropy, or whatnot will spend mana.  Sustains don't eat away at mana that's already been spent.  So just use the 30% before you flick it on.

I see i didn't know that's how sustains works. I thought they just deduct 30% of your manna whenever you turn it on or off.

I've played through the game using a nuker build i'm currently on my second run (bumping it up to nightmare) but i'm getting bored. Is pure support mage viable/fun or is it a total borefest?

Pure is boring since heals cycle so long. In DAO heals were weak but you had to rapidly deploy them, so at least was keeping you on your toes.

Its only fun if you keep diving in and out of HA to use some offensive/crowd control spells.

Fun? Well only you can answer this one but let me just say that a pure support mage is NOT standing around waiting to cast a heal in-between baking cakes!
P.S.
IMHO... After level 14, keep the HA up!

Is that so.. could you elaborate a bit more. If this is true then ill be happy to roll a support mage for a change

Actually I prefer SH/BM over FM/BM and there is a trick. Yes Healing Aura is supposed to reserve 30% of your mana, but it turns out that if you have any non-zero mana percentage left, you can always activate your Healing Aura while maintaining all other auras. I've gotten up to 120% reserved mana in sustained Aura spells this way (including Healing Aura) while still spellcasting using bloodmagic like a champ. Of course you can't use offensive spells while Healing Aura is up, but you don't keep healing Aura up all the time....

My standard group is; Hawke SH (Arcane, Creation & Spirit), Varric (traps, locks & speed), Merrill (Primal/ Entropy), Aveline at the start then Isabela.

This group places my 3 range against a wall (inside a room works best) and concentrates fire... kills plebs in seconds and doesn't need to worry too much about FF.
When not auto attacking; the two glyphs funnel adds & Haste helps grind down any elites.
Arcane shield is for high elemental damage like dragons while bubble is just an extra heal... I don't run with Anders (I find his personality is so annoying).

  • On my playthrough as an SH Hawke, I actually did tank the Arishok! As soon as I was hit, my health was instantly restored, making me more or less invincible. I just ran up to him, started hitting him with my staff, and when I was hit, I got back up and started hitting him again. Takes a long time, but it works! Also, if you swing your staff at the same time as the Arishok's sword, you can parry his attacks! It really gave an "epic duel" feel to the battle.
