Divine Divinity then? It's the first Divinity game (with Divinity II being the second), it's got a top camera (like Baldur's Gate) and you are free to do what you want at times. Kill people, explore, complete side quests, sleep in beds, hunt for treasure and the world is said to be very big (I've only played the demo but plan to get it soon). From what I have played, it's very different from its sequel and just like its sequel - very good.

2002 game BTW but you can pick it up for $3.72 on amazon.com or for £2.00 on amazon uk.

I'd recommend three masterpieces by Piranha Bytes:
Gothic 1
Gothic 2 (+ The Night of The Raven expansion)
Risen

All set in a fantasy world, which was obviously inspired by medieval era.

I have fond memory's of Gothic 2 - besides the crazy bugs before the huge patches.

RIsen  was kinda short and dissapointing i thought, the first 10 or so hours are amazing but the rest is eh.

I rather liked Risen.  Bits of it were stupidly hard, especially when fighting psychopathic moths, but I liked the overall atmosphere of the game: it was interesting and a lot of fun.  As with others, I thought the ending was a bit pointless, but overall I enjoyed it.

Which reminds me, I thought Risen 2 was supposed to be out around now, but there's no signs of it... :(

I see a lot of people recommending Risen and it's a decent game I give you that but if you are like me, who thinks the voice acting needs to be perfect (Im weird like that sometimes) then I cant really recommend it because of the VA (which was just awful IMO).

Yeah, Risen looks pretty good in the videos. I might buy it later.

I had a pretty easy time finding things. You should listen to what the guys have to say. That should help you. It is a really good game and you should buy it (for PC...just because consoles suck). If you go here, you'll find the trailer of Skyrim. Skyrim is going to be a huge success (probably), but I just can't wait 7 months.

Now I don't want to help you anymore...

<_<

Went emo ?

I'll just wait for The First Templar. Thanks for the suggestions.

I mean, I don't know how far back you want to go. Gothic 2 and 3 are good games. Don't know if you've played those. Stay away from 4 as someone else mentioned.

I remember when Gothic 3 was in vogue, there were a lot of things being posted like that where you could simply subtract one from those numbers to get a flavour of it.

But actually that's not to quibble with your point.  Gothic 3 wasn't perfect but I had a lot of fun with it: can't remember how many hours I put into it now but it must've been at least a couple of hundred.  Great soundtrack and an interesting world to explore.

Gothic 4 had potential; shame it didn't really deliver.  That said, I couldn't get into it enough to repeat the stages you're faced with in the demo so maybe it gets better, but others' reports don't fill me with confidence.  A pity, because I think it could've been so much more if it wasn't rushed to market.

Gothic 3 didn't deliver the full game before the -- probably undrealistic -- deadline and the job was given to another studio, making a full out action RPG that's extremely linear.

The game is horrible in the sense that the AI is beyond stupid and searching qests was follow the !-blip on the map. I had fun the 23-25 hours it lasted. The only thing it got right is lighting and enviroment, but with that gameplay, it doesn't really add much.

I felt Skyrim would probably just overhyped.. I'm not honestly looking onto it.. But will keep a close eye on it. Although i admit the dragon is one of the most impressive dragon i've ever seen in any game. But that alone does not warrant the gameplay. If the gameplay is exactly as oblivion, i would most probably pass.

Oblivion < Morrowind just saying.

This is how I feel:

Skyrim > Oblivion > Morrowind > Daggerfall > all other TES games that I haven't played > all the other games that exist on Earth

Oblivion and Morrowind are really close...but I felt that Oblivion was more fun to explore. Exploring in Morrowind was not as good as Oblivion. Oblivion also had more content (horses, chairs, player houses, etc.).

Skyrim's not out yet. For all you know, you may enjoy Oblivion better. Personally I never did and I never enjoyed Morrowind either, though I do think Morrowind is a more worked on game than Oblivion, it seems to have more content and a bigger world and even allows you to select armor pauldrons and choose different types of armor for 9 armor spaces. There also seem to be more quests and you even have freedom to kill everyone regardless of it they are part of the main quest or not. Whereas in Oblivion - the world is more smaller and you can equip up to 5 pieces of armor and certain NPCs can never die. Combat on the other hand in both games is terrible IMO.
