Iv dreded facing it ever since I got my butt kicked by it so long ago. But I need tha acheivement! So... I ask, how high of a level should I be to take on the high dragon? & Would using the Ostagar glitch to get to level 20 make it  harder to fight?

BQ. Which party members should I use?

Also... Does cone of cold still freeze it solid, or did a patch make it restitant to it?

I can only tell you about the experience I had.
I was only about level 14 when I fought it. I had Zevran, Morrigan, Wynne, and my dog with me.
Zevran died after about 10 seconds. The rest of us lived (I was a mage and kept healing us throughout), but the fight took about 10 minutes. Also, I was playing on Normal.

How could you have four team mates with you when you can only have three? Did you mean you had, you, morrigan, Dog & Zevran?

The higher your level, the better, as it helps to at least have a durable tank for this fight.  I did do Arl of Redcliffe/Urn of Sacred Ashes first once, and I was probably somewhere in between lv 12-15.  At lower levels, more healing is probably needed, and the dragon would take longer to kill, but it's certainly doable.

Alistair, Leliana and Wynne are usually in my party for this fight. If I have Oghren or Sten with me, I'll have them switch to bows when the group is focused on the dragon, while Alistair is tanking.

There is a mod than allows you to play with the dog as a fifth companion.

I do not remember the url, but google "Dragon age extra dog slot" and you'll find it.

level 14 is a pretty solid level. just make sure you have 1 tank and 3 ranged because melee die really quick unless you constantly control them, which gets annoying.

I already beat, at level 25, used the Ostagasr glitch, it was easy, my main pc only got killed once, but that was cause I wasnt paying attetion & it used its chomping ability, it thats what you could call it.

The high dragon is level 15 on default. So if you are going to deal with her the first time, it is very difficult and take long time. Come back later when your level is high enough and you have enough goods to encounter a combat with her. Fighting with her in melee combat is a bad tactics, honestly I don't recommend you to do this. Try to use the ranged attack, spells and healing constantly instead, take longer time but safer.

This works very well when the High Dragon is focused on just one of the ranged attackers and the ranged attacker is equipped with fire resistant gear. It makes it easier to heal up the party member as he/she takes the High Dragon down.

I've played through this a couple of times and initially used only ranged combat for all four characters.

But it can be interesting to set one character to do melee combat. Particularly a character who is an assassin with the mark of death and punisher talents. Positioning the character behind the dragon helps.

I used the same group I ran most of the game with: the good old "Holy Trinity" of my S&S warrior as the tank, Wynne as the healer/support, and Leliana as ranged damage, plus my mabari. The dog is more for flavor than anything, although he is strong against humanoid enemies. Against big "bosses" he is really weak because his stuns/knockdowns do zip. Still, it worked fine though the poor pup died near the end. I was about level 16-17 I think. As long as you have someone to take the punishment, someone to keep her/him upright, fire resistance and poultices/mana potions, the dragon's not so bad.

... tackling her earlier without preparation, just for fun and to see what she does, got the same group wiped out in about 15 seconds. Great fun!. :wizard:

This group is the easiest:
Shale to keep the dragon's attention - she can't be chomped. Taunt and Stone Roar.
Wynne for healing.
Leliana or Morrigan for ranged attacks.
Your pc - ranged attacks or if melee, always from behind.

I constantly control everyone anyway and I would call it the opposite of annoying.  I find tactics to be annoying and I remove most of them and make them as simple as possible just so they don't get in the way of my plans.

Just have Shale lol!!! I would say 15 and up is good but it all depends on difficulity also I would also do Sten and Maybe Oghren and just get rouges in party after the fight! Or bring Wynne if you yourslef are not a healer! Healer are just as vital as tanks with a high dragon or Flemeth!
