Currently my retail version of Mass Effect is unplayable but I gather from other threads that I simply need to patch it (v1.02) , but it can't find Mass Effect to do and it suggests reinstalling. Yet when I reinstall it says Mass Effect is already on my system...

Some have mentioned the game needs to be run for the registry to be ceated... but the game wont run in the first place that's why I need the patch.

System info:
Windows 7 64-bit
Intel i5 2500k
8GB RAM
Asus P8P67 Pro
AMD HD6950

The reason it is unplayable in the first place is because it crashes every time I try to run the configuration utility, which appears to be essential the first time it is played. I can't imagine not meeting system requirements, Mass Effect even runs it fine on my other machine that doesn't technically meet the requirements.

EDIT: OK I can launch the game just fine if I directly use the Mass Effect exe rather than the launcher, but the patch still does not recognise that it is installed. I have tried reinstalling.

The requierment to run for the registry to be updated is only if you are running the Steam version. EADM and disk versions do not have this requirement.
Are you running the game, menu launcher, and patch executable with admin rights, and in WinXP compatibility mode?

Gave it a go and no change unfortunately.

I also tried uninstalling it proper, installing from the harddrive and rebooting but still the same story.

I tried downloading the patch from somewhere else not much hoping it would do much... and what do you know it works and the game now runs as it should. Weird.
