So Sister Petrice, or should i say Mother Petrice gets an arrow apiece in the chest and in the noggin. Killed within the walls of the Chantry, the house of God (Maker) and the Grand Cleric just walks away and orders the Viscount fetched. Nothing more. Symbolic of Kirkwall's double standard system of justice. If convenient, its justified.

Considering Grand Cleric Elthina hardly does anything throughout the entire story, are you really surprised?

What could she do? Its not like the Qunari would submit to the laws of Kirkwall.

You mean what could the highest ranking Chantry official in the city-state do? The Grand Cleric who is second in rank only to Divine Justina V?

In true Elthina fashion, she decided there was nothing she could do, it was the will of the Maker, etc.

She may have concluded letting the Qunari execute Petrice was her best shot at a convincing peace offering. Protecting Petrice, who Hawke can often implicate to the Arishok, would cast the Chantry as officially sympathetic to her position. By not defending Petrice, she had a shot, at least, of washing her hands of the matter.

Her walking away may have been the only thing that kept the Qunari from detouring to the Chantry before killing the Viscount.

A more courageous action would have been for her to go to the Qunari compound and offer herself to them. That would have been interesting.

She's a Grand Cleric! I bet she's at least level 20.

She casts Enthrall and Knight of Glory. One less Qunari in the world.

And what would she do?

Grand Cleric: Mr Arishok, please hand over the Qunari responsible for the murder of Mother Petrice.

Arishok: .............................................no...

Absolutely. As leader of the Church/Chantry, her stature and influence should not be held hostage by the will of barbaric heathens. Even if it means conflict, the leader of the church should defend its principles to the death if need be lest you want her and the chantry's role diminished and taken for folly, ridiculed for weakness. Remember if history has taught us anything, its that true leaders of the faith choose death over subjugation.  And i'm not talking about an rpg.

I don't know what she could have done. If the Qunari hadn't walked in and killed Petrice I would have been burning her alive, Chantry or no.

no you wouldn't have.

like the first time you meet.  you tell her you're going to kill her.  she just invokes the EAWare gods and TELLS YOU "No you're not" and you just watch her walk out.

you'd only be "burning her alive, Chantry or no." if the EAWare gods allowed it.

otherwise...you'd stare at her stupidly like the first time, bloodthirst or no.

Elthina could have at least given the qunari a little applause. I know I did :)

This scene clearly shows what Elthina is doing. Nothing. And that's why I hate her. I would not kill her, but if Anders just blew up the Chantry and her I would have given him standing ovations.

Bah, I am disgusted at how lowly some of you seem to think of Elthina, merely for being a realistic religious leader.

She should have set the Templars on that guy. They could have caught him long before he made it back to the docks. Then he should have been tried by Kirkwall's laws.

Because she is able to look at everything that happens within the context of the real world, instead of just blindly following her religion like the Arishok does?

That would have been the fastest way of starting the war with the Qunari.

No. Because an optimal religion does not require leaders, just maybe preachers. Religion is not supposed to force people with laws.

Appeasement never works. The airsock or whatever he's called was looking for a fight anyway.
