I was reading an older issues of Gameinformer and they showed a timeline of events. In this timeline, it stated that BDtS takes place AFTER you defeat Saren and the end game. Now to my knowledge, unlike ME2, you can't go back and do anything in that playthrough after you beat the game. How can this be accurate?

I don't think it matters when it takes place. It's definitely after you become a Spectre (they wouldn't send you on that mission otherwise) but I didn't see any dialogue in-game that places it after the Citadel attack

I don't think so. You can't complete it after the game because you can't continue a post-ending playthrough.

It's what is known as a ret-con in writing and in gaming. Because ME1 was built differently than ME2 or DA:O or DA2 you had to replay ME1 to play Bring Down The Sky and the subsequent DLC the shooting DLC, I forget the name of it. Now with the advent of ME2 and DA:O and DA2 they have started implementing the feature of play after a game is over. FFXIII is a good example of this. You beat the main story but there are several achievements you cannot get until the game is over because it is impossible to get them during the main game.

So yes Bring Down The Sky is a post ME1 story but could not be played that way because the way ME1 was created without the option to play post save the citadel. Bring Down The Sky and the other DLC for ME1 were both released about a year or so after ME1 was launched. So you take it as you will I guess.
