looking just at the technology, weapons and buildings, what time period is DA set in?
What earth-equiv time period is DA set in?

I would suggest to think of it as being set on an entirely different planet, a few thousand years after the advent of civilization and recorded history.

I'd say the 16th or 17th century, only with the Qunari having brought the use of gunpowder to the continent earlier than it reached europe, in a limited way. It's far less important than that was in our history, though, since mages can do most of the same things more easily, and the Qunari don't share knowledge.

Thats tough. In terms of general warfare I'd say the 12th-14th century. With the heavy plate armour, massed archer volleys and melee combat. I wouldn't go much later, because the armour styles changed a lot in the 16th century or so. Basically a lot of troops just got some form of chest armour. So yeah, I'd say 14th century, with an accelerated introduction of gunpowder.

I think gunpowder was around the 13th century so I's put it around then 13th-14th century.

The reason I son't put it that early is the plate armor.Aaleel wrote...

It's a parallel world to the feudal era - y'know, the obvious ones like kings, glorious empires, historic battles and events, slaves, witches.
More direct: Medieval times.

In a world where magic has such prominence and fearsome potential, the natural progression of civilization and technology would be vastly different from Earth.
As a result, it doesn't exactly make sense to compare time periods with our own historical progression in this way.
For example, would we have ever invented refrigeration, electrical generators or the telegraph, if there were magically gifted humans who could freeze objects, create electrical lightning storms or communicate via long distance by using magical elven mirrors?
Not to mention the absurdity of medicine tech when a simple spell can easily bring someone back from the dead.

There is no single earth equivalent. It is inspired by multiple.

Early 1600's there is widespread use of two-handed swords and full plate armour that is very complex in it's design and decoration. Plate armour of varying degree is used by nearly everyone from the common soldier to the richest noble and despite the existence of gunpowder traditional weapons remain the norm with any ranged combat relying on either the mechanical crossbow or the longbow.

What he said ^^ however what usually happens to fantasy universes that have magic and various warring nations and monsters is that technology advances very slowly and almost always its just weapons and machines of war that advance. The Expression "Beaten Back to the Stone Age" is common in these settings.

I was going to say around 14 - 15 hundred in terms of both culture and technology.
However, I don't think they're directly comparable - as it appears that Thedas has been locked in virtually exactly the game technological and social epoch for a few hundred years at least.

i do realise magic skews things, hence my talking about the weapons and buildings.
I realise its hard to compare a fantasy land with earth but its still fun to do so

One can't really say.
The boat they use to get to Kirkwall would point to the 13th century ( I would compare it to a cog) as would the culture (feudalism with heavy religious themes). Yet all the full plate armour looks more like 15th to 16th century.

Most fantasy games are best called late medieval/early renaissance in terms of the weapons and armor and really the level of social organization. DA is not different in that sense.
Where most all of them fall out of time is the common use of swords and full plate armor which really was never common fare in any period.

It's not equivelant to any real world time time period. It's a fake fantasy world.

B)doing some research for FF and had to respond to above post..... aaaaanndd there weren't heavy religious themes in the 14 and 15 hundreds? Different than 1200s, but pretty heavy.... some guy named Luther and others called Henry VIII & Wolsey & Cromwell (Thomas not Oliver)??? Lepanto, Charles V, Phillip of Spain, Mary of England. Just sayin.....
Altho' I do agree its a mix of High/Late Middle Ages earth time (13th - 16th Centuries).
