Most of what I've read around the forum and elsewhere…It feels like most fans are disappointed. Do you think Bioware will listen to what the fans are saying, or listen to the fluffy critic reviews*?

*Not including the Game Informer review. They actually called DA2 "a step back" from Origins.

Let's hope so. DA2 had its share of problems, it wasn't perfect. Personally, I'd like for the protagonist's choices in DA3 to actually matter this time.

Forums are not really a good indicator of the popularity of a game. The most lucrative game ever has hordes of people on its forums constantly saying how badly it sucks, but they continue to pay $15 a month to get their crack fix.

True. But the forum isn't the only one complaining, is it?

Yes.

Just like the negative responses to DA:O impacted DA II and the negative responses to ME 1 impacted ME 2.

I'm sure it will. Will the changes be huge from the fans feedback? Probably not by much. Professional reviews seem to be taken more seriously. Can't imagine why.

Reviews are not really a good indicator of what the dev team wants to do with the next game in a series. The developers themselves are inevitably the harshest critics of a project, because they know every shortcut, kludge and hack they made in order for the product to ship, and how they would have made it better. I can guarantee that practically every flaw pointed out by the press or fan has been considered by a developer at some point. The fan typically spends hours, days, maybe even weeks on a particular game, but the developers spend years. Obviously, that sort of information rarely makes it out into the public for PR reasons, so you won't catch them saying it... but I'm willing to bet sovereigns to shingles that they've got a decent amount of in-depth post mortem data covering what they want to do better for the next game.

BioWare's actually got a decent track of listening to their customers. They did address problems with DA:O (slow combat, length of game, making the melee classes more exciting, streamlining inventory and crafting, etc) unfortunately they created a whole new set of problems (lack of meaningful choice in game, over simplified companion inventory, overuse of the same 5 maps, etc).

This is the first time Bioware's personally let me down (not like they set out to do so) and I've still played the game more than 3 times so it's not that bad (I play on a PC). I have faith they'll turn it around, maybe even in the expansion.

Hopefully things will turn around and they'll learn how to work underneath EA's crushing yolk. I really hope they stay away from over "console-izing" the game.

I doubt it.  Not if Laidlow is retained as lead designer anyway.  Based on his prior works and public interviews, I get the impression that he is always right and if you ever doubt that, you should just ask him.

When you wrote "can't imagine why", did you mean that professional reviews deserve more attention that player reviews? Because I disagree to some extent. Professional critics aren't paid to give their honest opinion. The polite, mature player reviews are worth the developer's time.

On the other hand, professional reviews are articulate. Better than "OMFG DA2 SUCKS!". ;)

The hard part with player reviews is separating the wheat from the chaff. There's a LOT of chaff out there. Really though, specific reviews rarely factor into development. What usually ends up happening is the developers looking at the complaints that receive the most attention from reviewers, players, etc. and then trying to make those systems better. Either that or just cut them from the game (e.g. planet scanning).

ME1 had a tiny fraction of the criticism that this game got, and ME2 turned out radically different to fix the issues... so sure it'll affect DA3 a lot, i fully expect it to not resemble DA2 at all but not necessarily just be copy/pasted Origins either, which is fine with me i suppose

It will have impact. Just the question is will it be a good or a bad one.

I have the feeling they have the choice to put more effort into it to win back some of their reputation and fans or to try milking the cash cow one more (and probably last) time. What will they do I wonder, what will they do ...

They can milk Dragon Age even more if they win back their reputation by making DA3 extremely good. They can probably make even more in the sequels. if DA3 is bad they'll have to abandon the project or rather they should.
