We know Shepard was dead during that time, but they don't know that. Shep doesn't even approach on a professional level, just a friendly casual hello.
The whole scene was written badly, not just the VS, and given the way Shepard approached it, they had every reason to get angry. Doubly so if the VS was a love interest. On Topic: I don't really feel to make a big fuss over them being spectres. If they're I'm sure they've done something "exceptional" in the 2years that would have impressed the council futher. My only issue is that them being a Spectre just doesn't seem that interesting of a storyline. But we'll see what happens come ME3.

Let's look at it this way: A modern day war hero disappears and turns up two years later working for Al-Qaeda. This guy would be brought in and tried as a traitor. Cerberus has committed dozens of attrocities, they are most definitely the bad guys. If I was Shepard, I would only work for Cerberus for as long as I need to, to defeat the Collectors and the Reapers, then destroy the organisation.
Ashley and Kaidan deserve a pat on the back for the patriotism and loyalty to the uniform that overrides their loyalty to a man who might have gone rogue. Any Shepard who considers himself still worthy of unquestioning loyalty after working with terrorists is a stupid ****** with a huge ego and an overblown sense of entitlement. He has to earn their loyalty back as far as I'm concerned.

That said there is an issue in that when Shepard does report in at the Citadel, he is not only not arrested, he is allowed to leave again with the SR-2, and not so much as a debriefing. Even Anderson doesn't seem to want to ask him anything about Cerberus. The Council are even willing to reinstate him, and order him to go back into areas they previously insisted were too politically sensitive for any Spectre to go into.
Of course he even crosses the veil without anyone even mentioning it, as if it is no problem at all....

Believe me, I'm right there with you concerning the scene of Horizon. But I don't blame the characters, I blame the writers for the pure idiocy that is that scene.
It does not in itself detract from the fact that they could be potential Spectre candidates, or that they are squadmates for ME3. I mean, there are squadmates in ME2 I couoldn't imagine my Shepard bringing along on a suicide mission, after all.
All it means is Bioware has their work cut out for them in rehabilitating these characters in people's eyes, and somehow making that scene make sense. Seriously, that has got to be addressed in ME 3 somehow. If that just gets swept under the rug or trivialized, I will rage. And I'm a staunch fan of the VS.

I blame Bioware and the writters as well . As far as them being Spectres if it is true and they are written better then I am fine with it . But if they are Spectres and written just as bad as they were in 2 . Then I have no use for them . Bioware has change a lot of things with them for Me to give them a chance.

One, Virmire Survivor needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. Two, whenever Virmire Survivor's not onscreen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Ashley/Kaidan"? Three, if you did not romance VS, then they'll automatically have sex with your Shepard's Boyfriend/Girlfriend, because they're that awesome.

It means VS trust Alliance more than s/he trusts Shepard. How can you be sure that they won't shoot you in the back when Alliance tells them so?
I guess that explains why when they reported back to Anderson, they actually backed up Shepard's story. Because y'know, they're secretly waiting for the opportunity to stab Shep in the back.

I never said that they want to betray Shepard themselves. They just do what Alliance tells them to. And if their superiors order, for example, to sabotage Normandy's engines, how can I be sure that they won't obey this order? And if Alliance tells them that Shep gone completely rogue and s/he needs to be eliminated, like Saren, can I be sure that they side with Speard and not the Alliance?
And also, when exactly they backed Shepard's story? Quote please. As from what I've seen, all they say is 'I'm going to report about what happened here and we'll see if they believe your story'. Maybe I missed something later, and if you point this moment to me, I will be grateful, but I never seen anything that says they backed Shepard's story.
To me this conversation shows that VS doesn't trust Shepard at all. 'Maybe they will believe your story' - for me it reads as 'I don't trust you, but maybe my superiors think otherwise, I will rely on their decision'.
Also, think about it - Shepard came to the Citadel, reported to Council, talked to Anderson and Udina, got Spectre status back and even got green light to continue working with the Cerberus for the sake of investigation. VS's superiors never bothered to tell them this info, and VS never askes Shep any of this. They were blinded by the grudge so much that they didn't want to hear your explanation. They could ask to sit and talk about what happened, but instead they decided to report back and learn Alliance's oppinion.

It's more than just the bad writing/railroading in that scene for me. Its the deliberate deception Bioware pulled on us:
a) So you're not coming = I can see that you won't listen to reason. Meh. Okay. Pretty clear cut.
c) I'm not working with Cerberus = Ash, you know me. You know I'd only do this for the right reasons. WHAT. THE. FVCK? Where did that response come from??? I wanted to tell Ash that Cerberus and I aren't friendly!
