Well it's not Halo or even Elder Scrolls series' sales, but It is a spectacular number for a sci-fi RPG from a new IP, I think. After ME3 comes out they will easily cross the 10m mark, which is really cool.

* I'm leaving me1 dlc out here as BDTS was free on the pc and Pinnacle Station didn't appear to sell well <- could easily be wrong.
DLC adds fair amount to a games success now.

DLCs are very important factors.Demigod wrote...
Also assuming the DLC cost to price ratio is good (they wouldn't make them if they weren't) you have to add those who bought at least one dlc for me2* and this has been a very financially successful series.

Unlike the games, Bioware receives 100% of the profit.

2 million copies sold within the first week, another 7 million by the end of the two games.
And it's true!

That's not actually the case. They have to pay for Sony and Microsoft to host it on their services.

Not the most spetacular number?7 million copies for 2 games is excelent. Sometimes this "Call of Duty or bust" mentality scares me a little. I truly hope that, in the future, the gaming industry will still see "only a few million" copies sold as a success and also continue to hold a place for awesome niche games that sell only a couple hundred thousands, like Atlus' Persona series and Namco's Tales series, or our gaming future will be grim indeed.
3.5 million copies sold would be incredible for the Witcher given it's small production cost, but ME are much more expensive to make. Dunno how much, but I did hear rumors of Mass effect 2 costing 30-40 million to make. Given the great production values and notable voice actors, it wouldn't surprise me ( while the Witcher 2 is rumored to have a budget of 7-10 million if that thanks to far lower wage ).
The biggest problem of this industry is the high cost of creating game for one or both HD console, while having no guarantee that it will sell to expectation. Love or hate Epic games, they have a point when they say the game industry is a scary world. EA and activision simply won't accept their titles being niche since they have big teams and pay a fairly high cost in term of wage so they try to cut corners in term of production time ( games are often rushed or super safe sequels like Guitar hero ) and overspend on marketing thus a failure become a huge money sink ( and the product must sell 4-5+ million copies instead of 1-2 ).

This always struck me as bit odd since a lot of people seem to play the games, and the ME series is both critically acclaimed and widely known. IMO that should put it in sales comparison with series like Metal Gear Soild, which usually sell around 4 million copies or more with each title. That to me is the mark for a good game. If you're dabbling around the 2 million mark that means the game is still relatively obscure, although obviously a hit. But yeah if your game sells in 3-4 million range then you can take your place among the greats. Since a game with sales figures like that is something that anyone who calls themselves a gamer will have to recognize.
I'm guessing ME1 sold around 3 million copies and ME2 has sold 4 million copies? That would seem about right. Still like to see it sell more, especially considering the series is now (finally) multiplatform.

If I were to guess, however, I'd assume the profitability is much lower on the ME series than other games. All the FPSers sell a lot, yet seem like a cut n paste job: army dude shooting a gun for about 7 hours worth of gameplay. Toss in some cutscenes and you're there. The ME's are so well done with VAs and the game length, it strikes me that although so much more work is put into them, I suspect the big name FPSers sell more copies.
yeah, not exactly. Half-Life 2 cost around $40 million, Killzone 2 cost around $20 million. FPSs are still massively expensive, and given their being extremely popular, the advertising campaigns only further add to the budgets.

Yeah, seriously. I mean, I don't actually like either of the two niche series you mentioned but I'm no stranger to niche series. Xenogears is my favorite game of all time and it was just shy of a million in sales worldwide. And people still celebrated.
I think part of the reason people reactly more modestly to this is because this past Summer one of the BioWare execs -- I think it was Hudson, actually, although I could be mistaken -- was talking about how they were going to start aiming at ten million units sold as the mark of true success now that they've done so well by themselves.
And ten million units sold is, to be frank, not something I foresee BioWare accomplishing in its current condition. And that's not to say its games don't sell, because they most assuredly do. But ten million is... rough.

Not every game can be COD but 300 million is a huge amount. I thing COD black ops was the biggest entertainment launch of this century. They had sold 11 million copies by first month and considering the cost of each game was $60. Around $700 million in just four weeks and they sold a lot even after that.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last! Man, that brings back memories!
Oh Namco, give us back Xenosaga!!!
