I apologise if this has been posted about already but I wasn't able to find anything with the search function. This particular bug has been a pain in my side ever since the game came out and it clearly hasn't been fixed yet.
Whilst in combat the main player character frequently just stops doing anything. Stands still right next to foes waiitng to be told to start fighting again. The companions never have this issue. They'll resume doing stuff after performing a special action without being told. However Hawke doesn't only stop doing stuff after performing special actions but also, sometimes during normal swinging and blocking.
Now sometimes it's just a case of the icon disappearing mid swing but often the main character will just stand there looking stupid. I've heard that some illegal copies of the game had this "main character stops fighting" feature implimented to annoy people for purchasing dodgey copies. However I bought mine from a (supposedly) reputable rtader (Game.co.uk) and I doubt they would've sent me a pirated copy for my preorder. Not unless they really ordered a lot less stock than they needed to cover the Signiature preorders and decided to rip me off by sending me a pirate copy. And I doubt they'd try to geta way with that. Or at least I hope they wouldn't.
Also I've got a 2nd annoying bug to report. Sometimes, when switching characters whilst the game is paused, the selected character's portrait becomes slightly greyed out (barely perceptible) and they can walk or run but are unable to interract with anything else untill you switch characters then switch back to them again. This is most annoying when you try to pick up loot after a fight and find out you need to switch characters to do so.
I'm playing the game on Windows XP. Dunno if that helps identify the issues I've mentioned. I can provide more system specs if need be.
Hawke stops fighting (and the grey portrait bug)

You're not alone. I encountered this greyed-out portrait bug too. I had to switch members back & forth just to get the character working again.
And I think the controlled character not attacking when companions do isn't a bug. When you choose a certain character in combat, it overrides the auto tactics setting and thus, you'll have to manually select your targets (sometimes prompting the pause screen) in order to fight. It is rather frustrating though - DA:O controlled characters, when attacked, auto attacks back without requiring input.
Hopefully, both of this issues will be addressed in next patch.

I fear there has been a missunderstanding. I'm not referring to whichever character is being controlled at the time. This typicaly happens when Hawke is not being directly controlled. He/She suddenly developes a distinct interest in standing still, posing, flexing, and doing absolutely nothing. And I constantly need to switch back to Hawke to tell him/her to actualy do something. Hawke sometimes stops fighting mid strike. It's pretty bad.
Other party members never have this problem.

Maybe there's something in your character's tactics causing him to stop? Otherwise, dunno.
Regarding the second issue, I've got a thread about it-- it seems to be a UI issue which occurs when the mouse cursor disappears while it's highlighting something, such as when you adjust the camera angle by holding down the right mouse button while it's hovering over a character portrait.

Thanks Filament. I'm not sure it's anything to do with the right mouse button as it only sems to happen when selecting characters (and I don't tend to right click on portraits).
Nothing in tactics causign the main character to stop. They just stop

Hm, you're right, it can also happen if you left click on the portrait. If you click on the portrait, keeping the left mouse button pressed, and then move away from the portrait before releasing the left mouse button, the same issue will occur. Is that it?

Well it's possible. I wouldn't rule it out. Shame nobody else seems to be experiencing Hawke's frequent bouts of self induced paralysis 'though. well, sometimes standing there posing, swaying slightly but definitely not doing anything.

I've seen Hawke stop attacking too. Currently playing as a warrior on 1.02. It seems to happen most frequently when he knocks down a target. Instead of continuing the attack, he just stands there until I RMB on the target again. Maybe he just lacks the killer instinct?

This has been happening to me, too. Glad I'm not alone in this (though I'd rather no one had this problem, of course).

Does anyone know if the latest patch fixed this? I'm geussing it didn't but they could've included it in the "minor gameplay bugs" that aren't specificaly mentioned. I wouldn't clal it minor myself as it's just as annoying as having to re-issue commands to characters who were intewrrupted mid action (which they did fix) so hopefuly it won't be an issue any more.

They haven't fixed it. It still happens. This has got to be one of the most annoying gameplay bugs.

Did you report the bug in the planning and prioritization thread for 1.03? If not, report the issue in the current thread for this patch and again when they begin planning for the next patch. Less common bugs can easily fall through the cracks.

My Hawk stops fighting as well. I've only started playing after 1.03, so I don't know how it was before and thought it was just a gameplay quirk, but it's starting to get pretty annoying. I keep having to hit R or right click after every few swings.
