Falling asleep!? You mean getting knocked out or killed?
You'll need ways to paralize him or keep him at distance so you can deal heavy damage and keep rounding the columns to evade easily that "charge thing" he does. I'm not sure, but I think he is particularly sensitive to ice spells.

Probably more like him falling asleep because it's soo boring. Try coffee. It does wonders.
On a more serious note, just use spells like horror and gravitic ring (if you're a force mage) to keep him stuck in one spot. While he's unable to move just unload spells into him, and when he can move around, just run around/kiting while waiting for the cool-down for your CC spells. I find it helps to run to the opposite side of the room after dodging his rocket booster attack. This gives you a couple free shots at him as he slowly lumbers his way back to you.
You'll want to use a cold (or nature) staff as like panurge said, qunari have a weakness to cold (and nature). On that note, you probably want to avoid fire and electricity spells/staves because they are immune to those elements.

The boss fights are basically efforts in avoiding boredom and the Arishok is no different. I actually bumped him down to casual because once I figured out the gag with my mage I didn't want to spend the time to actually do it after a bit.
After the fight the thing i thought about was, in a bit of meta-gaming- you should take a maker's sight or 2 with you. Right before entering the room re-spec your mage to eliminate a lot of the CC spells and focus on DoT and single target stuff and anything that fixes him in place. The biggest problem I had was that I didn't have enough useful spells for one on one combat. You see, you use different moves when you're fighting half a dozen people than when you only have to be worried about one.

Cast Winter's Grasp / Cone of Cold. Then run away until they recharge. Repeat.
It can be very time consuming but it's not at all difficult.

Thanks all, it was a joke. This fight was extraordinarily easy yet ridiculously time consuming and boring. How this fight was ever finalized is beyond me, it's like Bioware called it in early for this one.
@ Sidney - Haha, yeah that's exactly what I did, quaffed a sigh of the maker and got all the damage and dots for this one. In this situation, sigh of the maker was well named.

It's less boring if you dodge his blows by stepping behind him, rather than just running away until your spells recharge.
Unless you've not got enough health to survive the impale move, in which case you'd better keep out of range since that's not dodgable..
