Well judging from Kotor 2, Alpha Protocol, New Vegas, Obsidian seems to be a very ambitious RPG developer in terms of delivering interesting gameplay mechanic. But their execution often falls short.
I still enjoyed Kotor 2 more than the first one however.
I really wish they had had the time to complete KOTOR 2 properly, I'll always be a little pissed at LucasArts for rushing it, and it had such great characters (as much as I like Flemeth, Keira beats her anyday of the week)
You know, I bought that argument back for Knights 2. But the simple fact is, Obsidian ends up gutting and rushing EVERY game they make. NWN2 did the same thing as well, in addition to all the games you've listed. Heck, with Alpha Protocol, they were given ADDITIONAL time and they still had dreadful gameplay issues.
They're generally good storywriters who are undisciplined in their craft. I don't want them anywhere near DA. And there's no valid reason for them to touch it. They didn't *improve* either game series they inherited from Bioware previously. And those were outside IPs, not inhouse.
And Keira was the epitome of "obvious betrayal." There were interesting parts of TSL's story. The ham-handed betrayal and half-hearted romances were *not * among them.
I'll give credit to Obsidian for 1 good expansion pack to date. Mask of the Betrayer. Beyond that, they're a developer I sank a lot of money in out of loyalty to Black Isle, but they've returned little of that trust.
I couldn't agree more. Obsidian's games are at best decent. They generally play safe with others IPs, and stick to the same formula so fans won't feel alienated, but at a more technically stand point, I think they bring little to the series. New Vegas is a good proof of that. It was solid, there are new gameplay mechanics to improve what Fallout 3 had, but other areas fell short of what Bethesda managed to create. Nevada is just not even close to how impressive Capital Wasteland is. The companion wheel is the same thing as the dialouge method, its an improvement, but only a small one.
Dungeon Siege 3 was just not even Dungeon Siege. I'm just ignore the flaws it has completely. IT wouldn't be a problem if its a reboot, but take away the 3 then. Its hard to see Obsidian's potenial when all the games they get to make are rushed sequels to captialized on the hype and succes the originals had. And when you failed to delievered when you had your chance with your own IP, its hard as a consumer or anyone to have any faith in they're future games.
