I've been pondering this for a while.   The prevalence of the Mattock in the Mass Effect-related media leads me to believe Bioware is ppushing it to overtake the Avenger.  Thoughts?

I don't think it's a default. I don't know why they'd push a semi-automatic rifle over the usual full-auto.

It probably just looks cooler than the Avenger.

In any case I hope not. The Mattock is so powerful its broken, but it also had a clip size so small it was pitiful. I hated using that thing, only ever gave it to grunt to use.

I hope they keep the Avenger though. That thing was my baby.

If you fully upgrade the ARs in ME2, the Revenant can be that-- lethally powerful as well as highly accurate.

While I do indeed like a full auto weapon, I use the revenant for that.

Nope I just like the Avenger. I can kill things just fine with it, it makes a kick as noise that isnt a wimper, and it allows me to lay down the distracting fire as one of my teammates take action.

In any case its my main weapon until I get  the revenant.

I prefer the 3 round burst to the Avenger before I get my revenant.

I start to like that gun in the GI interview about the sounds in ME3 more than any other AR. It sounds powerful, looks slick and it isn't based on a gun that already existed in previous ME games.

If they make the Mattock the default, they will almost certainly nerf it.  I for one think it deserves a good nerfing, but that's just me.  Honestly, they probably just think that the Mattock looks cooler.

I have a love-hate relationship with the Mattock. It will drop your target like a hot potatoe, but you are pretty much guaranteed to run out of ammo before the fight is over. (at least on insanity, I havn't played the easier difficulties in a while)

I don't like the Mattock that much. Prolonged firefights with it makes my trigger finger hurt.

It's powerful, though. But as a start weapon, I'd rather have something automatic to go with until I can whack an enemy that has a better gun.

As for balance, it does piddling damage but is very accurate. It's a little too "nerfed" already for my taste.

If they made the clip bigger or added more ammo the Mattock would be ideal for semi-auto oriented soldier class players

Err... Either you never used, or sucked at using, the Vindicator. Just sayin', because that is a standby weapon for me.

What are you talking about? The avenger is fairly accurate, especially if you don't go full auto.

The vindicator is very accurate, I just hate how weak it feels. (IT does great damage, but *Feels* weak)

Revenant doesn't start accurate, but with upgrades becomes much better.

The geth rifle is very accurate, but weak against most things. (I love it, but damn it can't penetrate armor worth ****)

I don't get when you say not accurate.

The Mattock has the highest DPS of all the assault rifles, so there's no short supply of damage there.

Yeah now that we're back with the Alliance maybe we can get the Lancer back instead crap Volus weapons.

I think the Collector rifle is the worst of them all. I'd rather take a gun with a bayonet.

And I have fully upgraded everything and I cannot and WILL NOT like the bloody revenant. Vindicator, Collector Assault Rifle and Mattock ftw.
