I'm trying to write a fic and I can't for the life of me tell if he's wearing a chainmail hauberk and legging things under his splintmail or just really rough fabric. In some screenshots it looks like mail, in others it looks like linen... I guess it would make more sense if it were fabric but his sleeves and legs really look like they're covered in mail.

Answers? Opinions? I don't have DA:O installed atm so I can't just load it up to look at it really closely either...!

The short answer to your question is, whether or not he's wearing chainmail under the spintmail, he'd still be wearing linen under that. You don't wear armor against bare skin.

Under Metal Armor: The base layer is quilted cloth padding, probably with light linen garments beneath, next to the skin. One would have an arming jacket with sleeves (this is where doublets come from), padded leg wear, and padding for feet, gloves, and helm. If metal goes around it, you want it padded.
