How do I side with Varnell? Every single option I choose, nice or aggressive, ends up with him killing the Qunari. Am I suppose to do Shepherding Wolves a certain way or do I need to have an aggressive personality for that particular quest? 

Also, if I decide to help him and Petrice is there a way to still duel the Arishok? I only say this because I'm assuming once I reach that point he'll consider me unworthy and not offer the option and it will just be a group fight.

I think you need to say "We could've been allies' During Shepherding Wolves and you need to have Aggressive as your dominant personality and chose the aggressive special option on the lower left. It doesn't matter if you helped Petrice since he'll challenge you if you earned his respect or Isabella returns with the book.
