So...why do asari have breasts?

Why do they have breasts? Human breasts evolved for a very specific purpose, to nurse human children and also as secondary sex characteristics to display that the woman is of child-bearing age.
But why do an alien species, whose reproduction system is worlds apart from humans, have them? Or belly-buttons for that matter?
By the way this topic is inspired by Samara's first appearance in the game.

Just because they "gather their genetic data" via a mind-link technique instead of sexual intercorse, doesn't mean they don't get pregnant. So their belly button serves the same function as a human's and their breasts serve the same function for nursing.

For the exact same reason you just stated.

Of course.
If it's a matter of BioWare simply wanting sexy aliens in their game, that's fine.
I'm just curious if they've actually explained it in any of the lore, since Mass Effect has an enormous amount of lore that seems generally consistent throughout.

Why do they need to explain it? Anybody knows what breasts are for.

Oh it is as far as the asari go. The ME1 Art book states outright they were meant to be "a race of beautiful 'green alien girls'". I.e., pretty much palette-swapped versions of these:

The problem is that Bioware have stated that Asari are not female. Its stupid, but they've gone and done it. They are claiming that Asari are not Female so that they can say that 'there have never been any lesbian relationships in Mass Effect'. Because it comes from the Devs its now canon. Like I said, its stupid.

No, it's not canon. Canon is what the game says, and it still says they're female. It also came out after Hudson made the first infamous statement. It's just PR nonsense that can be ignored. Unless of course you feel like mocking them for it.

I do a bit, yes. Mockery does seem somewhat appropriate doesn't it?

Controversly the two female aliens with breasts (Tali and Liara) have the bestwritten lovestories in the game and only Liara got one that involves talking to her after each mission (allthough that is most likely only because she got thrown out of the Normandy in ME2)

I'm fairly certain that they said that asari are 'monogendered'. That does not mean they are not female. You see, there's this strange miracle thing called 'childbirth'. You know, that amazing thing females can do.
To assume that 'monogendered' = not male/not female is just a preconceived notion when trying to delve too deep into things. Relax, OP, and try searching the forums once in a while. this asari debate has been going on for ages.

So it's not really lesbian as femshep and Liara could technically make blue babies. You can't have a romance with Tali as femshep, even though she is also an alien that resembles a woman because she is female. There are male quarians.

Male and Female have no real meaning to Asari. The are monogendered aliens which resemble human females due to similar post-intercourse reproduction cycles.
What do you think "mono" means? Hint: it doesn't mean "none". Also: go read what the Codex says about asari.

It is for Femshep because asari are practically identical to human women.

And of course the designer of them wasn't brave enough to get away from the standards, so the mono-gendered species all look like women.

Bravery had nothing to do with it. The entire point was to for them look like attractive women. There was never a possibility that they wouldn't.

You've answered your own question. Nursing is the probable reason behind it.

That's because a mono-gendered male species would be too impractical to work. Think about it, what if the asari were male? Do you think it would work the same?
The answer is: No. In order to be offspring-compatible with all species, the mono-gendered species would need a way of universally submitting chromosomes, among a lot of other things. The asari can do this as a female species because they use their own genetic data to create the embryo within themselves, using a partner to randomize the genetics. A male cannot do this, as a male is not - for any species - mate independant. Example: A male of a species that works by internal fertilization cannot fertilize, say, eggs that have been laid. I will stop here before this conversation goes in weird places.
Case in point: Don't pin uncreativity on something like that. Really, that's childish. I have a lot of respect for the designers of the Mass Effect universe, and with good reason.

*facepalm*
Did you not even read what I wrote?
I'll say it again, the developers (Bioware) have tried to claim this. Not me, I said it was stupid twice, did that not give you a clue? I even said why they were trying this BS.
