2 Rogues, 1 2H Warrior, 1 Mage - Nightmare?

If one Rogue is DW and the other Archer, is this a sensible party?

Or is it just too painful without a sword and board tank?

Playing on Nightmare.

Hawke: DW Rogue
Varric: Archer
Fenris: 2H Warrior
Merril: Mage

It's doable. Anything is doable really (e.g. 3 mage parties)
In those type of parties there's problems with setting up CCCs but in your case you'll be fine in that regard. You don't really need a board and sword tank (any warrior can tank), and if you're playing on nightmare you definately don't want too many melee companions clogging up the field and FFing each other.

The only potential issue I see is with heals and haste. Without anders (or a mage hawke) you'll be reducing your damage output as you won't have haste running (though the extra damage dealer may help mitigate the damage output difference). What are you using merrill for? Maybe replacing her with anders could work better?
I don't know, anything is possible really - but if you're into the whole maximising damage/speed runs it may be a little tougher with that party setup

Merril could be made a healer.

Is it just a silly team make up? It's really because I want to play with those characters and find Aveline quite boring. Just not sure if this party would be too light on.

Merrill doesn't have access to the creation tree. The only talent that she has that serves as a pseudo-heal is Barrier, and that has a gigantic cooldown.

Well if you are willing to let Varric go you can go for Fenris, Merill, Anders and DW Rogue.

Fenris syncs perfectly with any mage thanks to his aoe staggers and lightning strikes from merill/anders.

Although early in the game you can run into some trouble vs. assassins if you haven't invested in Stonewall/Bulwark with Fenris. Even without stonewall its doable but I just find it easier.

It is, but I'm aware of spoilers around the Anders thing. I knew Merril wasn't a practiced healer but thought she'd still have access to the basic heal spell

It's doable-- I find it easier in that case however to control Fenris personally and let Hawke run on tactics. When I let Fenris run on tactics, he's knocking the **** out of all the wrong people.

Also it seems the character you control personally becomes much more effective due to the closing attacks... he can be pretty beastly.

There is a mod to give Merril the creation tree so you can use her instead of Anders if you want. Of course she won't be as good as Anders at healing but at least you won't be required to take Anders in Acts 2 and 3 (until the end anyways) if you want a mage at least capable of casting heal.

With four people in the party, you're going to have at least two of one class. May as well be rogues.

At least one of yours is an archer and one is a DW-- I tend to use two DWers, but I don't find that lacking either, really. Of course, I'm not the best strategist around (/understatement), but it works for me.

Can you play 2x 2HW on Nightmare and not have then constantly hitting each other without too much micro?

It's possible but not recommended. You'll basically be reducing your ability to focus fire and may even have to sit out a character when using basic strategies (like blocking a doorway and staggering the crowds trying to get through). If you did you'd have to set up some really tight tactics and maybe avoid getting giant's reach.

btw, back to your OP, two rogues isn't such a bad thing. 2 rogues, a warrior and anders is a pretty competitive setup to most other setups if you build it right - e.g. have one of the rogues (e.g. Varric) focus on setting up CCCs with fatiguing fog while your board and sword scatters and your mages spirit bolt/sone fist/walking bomb/lightning staggers. Such a setup allows you the dual wielding rogue to capitalise on opportunities from staggers (explosive strike, vendetta) and brittles (assassinate) without having to bother setting up anything for anyone else which may be a fun way to play if you plan on mostly controlling hawke and leaving the others on tactics. Pretty much the only reason why your first idea was slightly hard to pull off was the lack of heals.

If you go for a merrill and anders party setup (also perfectly doable) you'll probably want to have a mixed class so if you're a rogue have a warrior to setup staggers and if you're a warrior have a rogue to open locks. CCCs between all three classes don't have to be taken though. e.g. Parties can be 3 mage one rogue and focus solely on the CCCs available between just rogue and mage

By the way does anyone know the link to giving Merrill the Creation tree?

Would you consider this a huge cheat? Who's in my party is one of the biggest part of the game for me.

Yes of course it is cheating… Each mage trades one tree for their personal tree.
Bethany = Primal.
Merrill = Creation.
Anders = Entropy.
But it is always your game so click this link. :wub:

Is there no other basic heal spell in any other tree? (or in Merrill's) personal tree?

The only heal spells are in the creation tree. It’s got Heal, it’s got a group heal (Aid Allies) and a resurrection spell. Those are the only healing spells anywhere, no other tree has any healing, and Merrill can’t get any healing ability unless you mod the game.

I know that sucks! I pretty much agree with you: who I choose to put in my party was a huge part of the game for me, especially on first playthrough. But in this game, you more or less have to take Anders. It’s frustrating, and there are many things that are frustrating about this game, and there are many people who focus on those things a lot and complain a lot, but I think it’s still a fun game even with its shortcomings so I’ve found it perfectly doable to focus on it’s upsides and play the hell out of it and enjoy it for what it is.

With regards to healing, the Creation tree only has that and the upgrade. All other healing spells are in personal trees.

Without Modding Merril u are screwed If you don't want Anders. Is a really simple mod to install.. I agree Anders is a Pain. And I wouldn't consider it cheating other, more like expanding your horizons. :)
