The "sexualization" of Mass Effect is downright mild compared to the rest of the industry. I liked Ashley just fine before except for her hair, I preferred her original concept art where she had short, disheveled hair, but in ME her bun looked like a permanent case of matted helmet head. This change for ME3 is an improvement, and probably nothing they wouldn't have done had they had more resources/time in developing ME or if Ash had a bigger role in ME2.
Did you know "improvement" is an anagram of "invert me mop"?
I find that interesting.
But seriously, I fail to see how Ashley's new look is an improvement in any fashion whatsoever.
What I liked about the original Mass Effect, in spite of its inconsistent and occasionally rather bland presentation, was that all of the prominent female characters were dressed in something utilitarian and fundamentally reasonable, which was innately attractive for the very same reasons.
Mass Effect 2 didn't quite live up to that standard.
Don't get me wrong, I loved what they did with Jack (even though the dungaree bra is a tad silly), and I think you can even rationalise the attire of Samara and Miranda (even though it feels absolutely ridiculous doing so, and the heels are hard to ignore).
But what is impossible to overlook is the overall glaring infantilisation of the sexual themes.
Miranda's butt shots, while honestly quite pleasant to look at, is a big no-no for a game which simultaneously asks you to assume it respects its audience.
Like I said, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with titillation, but is it too much to ask that it be contained for the appropriate moments?
I think Dragon Age 2 excelled in this area.
As for Jack...I hope the rumours are just that. Rumours. I would absolutely loathe to see her being reduced to another set-piece in this apparent pandering to the most base, juvenile and insecure demographic.
If BioWare acts on this hideous notion of Jack being "fixed" by the end of ME2, I'm going to abandon ship before it hits the proverbial iceberg.

I was more referring to the changes to Ashley's physique in regards to "improvements." I've long been a proponent of armored companions. I don't exactly like her hair down, either, but I like it a lot better than how atrociously rendered her bun was.

Others have stated in this thread but it bares repeating, is armor even functional at this level of technology. At the speed bullets are fired wouldn't it turn armor into Swiss cheese and be a medics worst nightmare to try to treat mortal wounds. Wouldn't a high mobile, skin tight, environmentally resistant body suit and portable shield generator be more efficient, like something Tali, Sam Fisher, or Nova would wear?
Possibly, except kinetic barriers only protects you from small, fast moving objects. Not slower moving objects, and likely not objects beyond a certain mass. The codex also specifically says it does nothing for temperature extremes, radiation, or toxins.
The charging krogan, the varren gnawing on your leg, the Collector particle beam, the rachni's acid spray, the vorcha with a flamethrower are all examples of things barriers wouldn't do squat about, but where armor would sure come in handy.
And that's not even including enviromental conditions.

And then, the second we see a picture of Ash looking like a woman as opposed to a macho 'I'm hard as nails' Vasquez-like marine, we get a bunch of people practically fainting over the level of debauchery seen in the computer games today.
I happen to like Ash's new look. I guess that makes me a hormonally-overcharged frat boy or something.

I do have to wonder about these forums, sometimes. Ok, Miranda may have had a few buttshots added to ME2 for the lolz, but some of the drama on here would convince a casual reader that ME2 was nothing but Miranda's ass slammed against the camera for 50 hours, worthy of any amount of Fox News outrage.

come on women have curves that make men happy, just like a sexy car that makes you stare and drool. its huMAN nature and i have to say that with proper diet and exercise that yes, girls do look like that. i can't really blame you for your opinion, but realise that gaming is a male dominated industry and we wanna see T&A god damnit!!!
"Earth belongs to males, deal with it."
Right. And this kind of attitude is exactly what I find jarring about the game in certain places. I wonder how'd you feel if the gaming industry was female-dominated, and to play a decent game you'd have to put up with males in catsuits and close-up of male crotches, and if you came to forum to compain in hopes to vent a little of your frustration, you'd get mocked and told to deal with it. Really, I'm dealing with it. The whole life is like that. I'm used to it. Still doesn't mean I can't say anything about it.
Really, though, would it be too much to limit close-ups of female bodies to romantic interactions? This way you can make sure that the player, whatever the gender, is actually interested in staring at those things. I don't even mind curvy females in catsuits everywhere, as long as you can see her face. I actually enjoyed watching the dancers in the Afterlife, and I wish there was an opportunity for Shepard to dance in the same manner, not just rock from one foot to another. But when Miranda's rear takes the whole screen, this is where things begin to border on comical.

Well, if they didn't want to be slammed for it than why were we given so many butt shots of Miranda? Not everyone finds her attractive or approves of the demeaing of women. What's worse is that femshepards still see these butt shots yet they aren't allowed to romance Miranda anyway. Thus it was messed up teasing if they were lesbian Femshepards or just rude if they were Straight Femshepards.
It makes me wish Miranda was a FemShep romance... *drools*

Darkhour, you have missed the point. There is sex appeal, and then there is HEY EVERYONE STOP THE GAME I WANT ALL OF YOU TO LOOK AT MY BUTT.
So what?
Thane: Hey ladies, listen to my smooth voice, my confident demeanor, see my suave posture, my chest revealing jacket. Are only females not allowed to be sexy. Just because you don't see Thane's appeal to women as equal to a Miranda's appeal to men doesn't mean the fan service doesn't go both ways. Do you stop the game and jack off to Miranda's booty? I doubt it. So what's the big deal?
Miranda is genetically designed to make men stop and check her out. Granted, I don't think she was evil nor manipulative enough to require such features (at least not in her role during the game). If she looked like some skinny, flat assed, flat chest, androgynous dykoid I doubt that facet of her persona would carry over. Do you think Tali's hips and thighs were overdone? What about Jacks lips and skimpy clothing... or must all men lust for phat ass and bigger ******? Morrigan's cleavage? Merrils skin tight body paint legging? Some people like smaller frames. Why is it only those character who appeal to people who like fuller bodied women over the top?
Out of curiousity, are you a man or a woman?

Oh god that line made me sooo uncomfortable. Ma Shepard ain't in it for da sex, yo. I'm not judging, but I really gotta say that I have no idea why anyone would romance the LIs for their sex appeal. I bought this game pretty much because it was popular. The gameplay was good, yeah and the story was cool too. Being the plot-addict I am, I'm waiting for ME3 just to see how the hell this franchise is going to end.

A smart, strong, talented, confident, successful woman in a leadership role, and because she has a nice butt it's somehow demeaning to women? Please.

No, it's because she's dressed in outfits that seem to give her a permanent wedgie (that cannot be confortable to walk or run in, with or without heels) and have it on display in really inappropriate moments.
Yeah I'm sure that helps the rank and file of Cerberus take her really seriously as a leader.

lol so it was the wedgie that demeaned her? I agree, wedgies are demeaning.
And with that, this discussion has become rather ridiculous.
