I don't get the hate for Jacob.  Like, at all.  He's a normal guy who's focused on doing his best to beat the "bad guys".  I've always been friends with him in every playthrough.

To be honest, I don't get the hate for him myself. I'm getting ready to tread in dark waters because of what I am about to say. So, here goes (And I know people are gonna shy away from this statement.): I like Jacob because of the stereotype his character kills off: The one thuggish black guy that's also the comic relief with his redundant usage of ebonics.

Some of you may not be able to comprehend how proud this made me. Very, very proud.

Jacob is a strong, young, black man. He's intelligent, like another pointed out, he is stable in his mind, he does his duty and he stands his ground. Now, granted, he does attack my baby, Thane, because of his profession before getting to know the man, which I didn't appreciate at all, but he did not let that form into something as worse as predjudice like Ashely Williams did. If anything, he handled everything with precaution and when that person proved themselves, he let loose a little bit and became laid back with his squadmates.

When you truly become his friend, Jacob is probably one of the coolest guys you ever wanna know and I love that about him.

Agreed. So many of the black guys in my high school try to adhere to that "gangsta-thug" style that is commonplace nowadays... it's pathetic. I was actually glad Jacob just seemed like a normal guy... albeit one with the potential to kill you with his mind. Now if only I could get him to use an AR, he'd be one of my permanent squaddies...

Its not that I hate Jacob, I'm sure he's a perfectly nice guy. But... He is just not at all interesting.

Things I didn't like about Jacob;
- His welcome to Thane
- "Don't forget to introduce yourself to the ship's AI"
- His behaviour during his loyalty mission
- His open *and* closed personality

I kinda took offence to your post.. As you are basically saying anyone who isn't over the age of 20 likes to look at the female characters and use their hands. I agree that there was too much shown in this game, way too much to be honest as the armor became really unbelievable and inpractical.
But pinning it all down to a certain age group isn't really fair, especially when you group them together, it does just seem a bit harsh and bit unfair.. :/

That's not what I think at all.  I was really pointing the finger at the developers, who tend to think that of their audience.  I don't blame seventeen-year-olds, not do I think they're all horny bastards.  Hell, I don't even have a problem with people who like the blatant sex appeal.

My problem here is that the devs are assuming the wrong things about their fanbase.  It's like they think I'm stupid and enjoy having butts shoved in my face.  Maybe I'm the acception to the rule, but I like to think I'm not the only one moderately annoyed with how the game sometimes seems to be all, "HEY YOU LIKE BOOBIES RIGHT?!"

"Yes, I like boobies.  Can we move on?"

"NO WE'RE NOT DONE LOOKING AT BOOBIES YET."

"God damn it, Bioware."

The "playing with one hand" thing was more of a joke.  I didn't mean to offend. :c

Because he is a boring (and sometimes rude) person with abseloutly nothing about him.

Jack is a great character and totally believable. If she didn't swear she wouldnt have been and I would have thought it was done for it to be a kids game. Honestly don't see why people tend to get annoyed with curby women, like Miranda. It's totally the real world where beautifull women and men have an edge on less fortunate people. In China it's even required for the most simple job to be beautifull.
Plus Miranda is believable cause she was created to be perfect. If your image of perfection would be a woman like Ruben's used to paint (aka big women), she would probably look like that. Jack same deal, bred for perfection and a total sociopath. Ofc she swears. I like my games realistic (as in human nature realistic) and swearing and the advantage of beautifull people is all around us.

I prefer some sexiness in the game thanks. unless your gay or you are a female who is jelous of the characters in a GAME then you will want the females to look ugly and or manly.

... but I need to get this out of my system.

The one thing that annoys me most is that game developers often assume the only people that play their games are young, horny males who have never had a girlfriend and probably will never get one.  Female characters, if present at all, are frequently given over-exaggerated "hot" bodies jammed into revealing and too-tight outfits.

Bioware is no exception, but to their credit they often made a joke out of it to mock their cheap pandering to a seventeen-year-old's erection and backed off on the whole boobies thing when it wasn't appropriate.  For example, take ME1: it had an entire race of sexy babes, but Bioware was able to get away with this because they poked fun at the trope and also gave the asari an interesting culture and deep characters.  There was only one case of extreme cleavage (Matriarch Boobnezia Benezia), and none of the female leads were overtly sexualized (FemShep and Ashley especially were pretty plain in their body-types and never wore anything incredibly revealing apart from certain types of armor that had a tendency to ride up the crack).  So I let them get away with it.

And then came ME2.  Suddenly, boobs, boobs everywhere (plus a few manly bits this go-round: check out Jacob and Thane.  Specifically, check out Jacob's butt, which really is as bad as Miranda's save for it got less screen time).  Now, I didn't complain too much because for the most part it fit the characters and again they mocked themselves for doing it (Miranda's buttshots and her encounter with a certain Eclipse commando).  It only really got stupid when people started running around with naught but a breather mask, and at the very least all the characters were interesting enough as people that I was able to look past the cleavage.  However, Tali's reduction into a "shrinking violet" type of character set off alarm bells in my head, and the presentation of all female characters in Genesis (the PS3 comic) would have made me punch Casey Hudson in the teeth had I not been able to transfer my blame to the Dark Horse team, who tend to kind of suck anyway.  At least they didn't try to sex up FemShep apart from some really agressive flirting which I usually avoided or skipped over anyway.  So again, Bioware got a pass.  A very shaky pass, but at least it wasn't Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive.

But now, looking at the new information trickling in about ME3, I am beginning to suspect things are going to get worse (perhaps better for those of you who play alone and with one hand).  I know we know next to nothing about ME3, but Ashley's new look (sans bun, bigger ******, and a tight body suit) plus their comment about Jack being softened and matured raised a few red flags.  The PS3M article, which I shouldn't pay attention to because it was written by a bunch of very randy morons who didn't bother to do their homework, only made matters worse by reminding everyone how hot and sexy all the female characters are.

Listen, fellas: Jack and Ashley were cool because they didn't conform to the role of typical female lead.  Now, I'm hopeful these two characters will retain their unique (albeit somewhat abrasive) personalities, but after Tali...  I really don't know.

Yeah, I know I'm complaining too much.  But honestly, one of the reasons I enjoy the Mass Effect series is that I can play it without feeling like the developers think I'm some sort of half-wit mouth-breather.  I mean, seriously Bioware, you don't have to objectify your characters when your fans do it for you.  Put what you do best--your characters--first, and save the energy wasted on over-abundant sex appeal for something more important.

And yeah, I know I probably shouldn't be worrying.  I'm sure ME3 will be an awesome game, but nonetheless, consider me mildly concerned.

EDIT: Fixed a typo.  Seriously, "Asley?"  Boy oh boy, I don't even...

Well said, I couldn't agree more.

Add to that the newest comment from the Art director of ME about female aliens, turians in specific:

"We usually try to avoid the females -- cause what do you do with a
female turian? Add breasts, what do you do? Add lipstick on her?"

... and my mild concern turns into anger.

LOLWUT

Kaidan wasn't a douche to Thane
Kaidan wasn't a douche to Tali
Kaidan didn't even have a loyalty mission
and Kaidan didn't have an open/closed personality.

You know, Kaidan bored me the most out of the squaddies in ME1. It took many playthroughs and a few years before I respected him and realized that while he's not the most interesting person around, he's still a character and isn't a brick fricking wall.

But Jacob? Jacob is NOTHING.

"Hurr durr, mah name is Jacob. Commander." /summary of all his conversations

Kaidan had Rana. Kaidan had BAAT. Kaidan had Vyrnnus. He had a personality that could be altered. He questioned some of Shepard's actions. He dealt with struggles every day.

Jacob has.....what? Daddy issues? He barely even had daddy issues. He's just.....there.

I'm friendly with him, but if I could go back to Virmire and sacrifice Jacob in his place so that both Ash and Kaidan made it out alive, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Jacob is a door. And behind it is the priiize, apparently.

sex appeal doesn't just exists in video games, its apart of our culture. should probably get used to this. i can't say i "play with one hand" as you stereotyped, but i would also much rather look at miranda in me2 then ashley in me1.

oh, i do agree with you on the breather mask thing by the way. all the ****ty dressed characters should have had some sort of enviro suit, or maybe a visible biotic barrier to protect them from the elements.. something would have been nice.

The interview

He openly states that they avoid the female counterparts to the male aliens because they have no clue how to design them. And apparently the artists don't have much interest in trying either.

THAT is angering me. Because that is the most idiotic thing I've heard from an artist in quite a while. Especially from an artist who is on a team who was responsible for a few of the most interesting, beautiful and diverse alien-designs I've ever seen in any film or game.
And if that art director is trying to convince us that the artist team who is responsible for such creative character-designs is incapable of coming up with a convincing and creative design for their female versions, I'm just angered and disappointed.
Because this is just a blatant, lazy and idiotic way of saying "Nah, we don't want to".

This has been around a long time, not only in games but in movies, advertising and culture in general.

Doesn't bother me a bit.

Having the women be attractive is a bad thing? Personally I'm looking forward to ashley's new look. Instead of a silly bun making her look dude-ish, now she'll actually be presented as the attractive female that she is.

Honestly I thought ME1 was more of a teenage boy-ish game regarding romances considering the romance scenes were much more risque than those of ME2

Truth. I felt that way probably from 2007 all the way to 2010 before I was like, "Wait. No, this guy's pretty cool, actually."

Even if he IS just there, he's still infinitely more complex than Jacob "Kanye West" Taylor telling his lover that his previous lover is "too good for him" and referring to a "priiize" of some sort.

God I want to punch him in the jaw.
