I'm on my first play-through of Dragon Age: Origins. After twiddling my tactics, I really just want to have a quick impromptu battle with mercenaries or darkspawn to test things out. But it seems to take forever to fast-travel on the world map to get a random encounter like that.
Is there any other way (or perhaps a mod if someone knows of one) that can give me what I'm looking for?
Are there any ways to initiate impromptu fights?

there's some optional extra arena battles in Orzammar provings area if you talk to one of the NPCs there. there's only a limited number though so you may want to save game first, fight then reload to adjust and try again

In addition to the training battles in the Proving Grounds, traveling between various locations on the world map can also be useful. You will likely have to travel a lot, so it might be wise to save your game right when you enter the area of such an encounter.

I think I read somewhere recently that there are only a handful of so-called random encounters, and once they all occur (early to mid-game), then you won't encounter any more. So that answers my question.

Yes, the random battles are limited (unfortunately). Once you've seen them all, no more appear.

I think the Nexus mod site has a mod that was an attempt at making a sort of gladiator ring with respawning battles. But due to the way corpses are never removed after battle in the normal game, it was getting to be a problem in the mod (from what I read on the Nexus forum, I never tried it).
So what I think we want is the Dragon Age game but with Oblivion-style respawning baddies. I guess I can ask Santa for that in DA 3
