I don't use alot of my companions except for the three I have for my main party. I have already completed Lelianas, Morrigans, and Alistairs quest so that leaves Sten, Ogren, Wynne, Shale, and Zevrans. Do I have to actually take them along and do like a quest to trigger the conversation? I already know they have to have high friendship. I simply don't want to miss any questlines or XP.
Can I get the quests if I don't use them?

Wynne's quest starts with a couple of triggered encounters so you need her in your party at least a couple of times travelling between places once her friendship is high enough
Shale, Sten and Oghren can be triggered from dialogue at camp if I remember right
Zevran's will trigger automatically late in the game regardless, so long as he is still a companion, not necessarily in your current party though

Make sure you do Sten's before the Landsmeet though.
