As a fan of tough women in realistic armor, I have to say Saskia's design is disappointing. It looks neither protective nor interestingly designed. I like that she wears plate over her belly, but why not cover her chest too? It looks like she is wearing an incomplete suit of armor as is.

Granted, this is far from the worst armor design I have seen in a game. It is merely nothing to write home about unless comparing it to Aribeth's platemail or something out of "Sacred" or "Rift". :P Were I to grade it in terms of realistic and non-sexualized representation I would probably give it a C+ or a B at most.

It will be interesting to see how women in "the Witcher 2" are portrayed. I know it takes place in a crapsack world, and expect a heaping helping of sexism and worse, but that article Brock linked to was just... blergh. There was not one description there that failed to mention how each woman is sexy is some fashion. They try to bury it by saying X and X is capable, powerful, or whatever, but it sends a very mixed message. Unfortunately I will have to hope someone whose opinions I trust buys the game and gives that aspect a thorough review, since I will not have the opportunity.

Cannot agree more maybe there are great character with really meh design but that preview really did not help at all.

I am really afraid of this, I really really hope she stays that way and do not go to the past because of Geralt. :pinched:

Really, why do you even post in these threads?  It's obvious from the tone of your posts that you don't like the Witcher series (probably because you're an overt feminist), yet you constantly feel the need to criticize the game because it doesn't live up to your lofty standards of gender equality Image IPB

I criticize plenty of games for that. If you were around the DA2 forums in the months leading up to its release you would have noticed the occasional similarly themed post there. As to why I post? Because I feel like it. I do not need permission or an excuse other than wishing to express my opinion. If you dislike what I write so much, ignore it. I sure as hell will not stop because of anything *you* write, that is certain.

Given how many people voice their complaints about DA2 on the DA2 forums, I see nothing wrong with someone voicing a complaint about the Witcher 2 in a Witcher 2 thread. And it's not like she's posting that over and over on every page.

And "lofty standards of gender equality"? Please.

That's a legit reason to criticize a game....

What's great about the Witcher is how it sublimates the hero's essentially homosexual proclivities into rampant Don Juanism. Anything that gets teenage boys more comfortable with their actual, rather than societally imposed, sexual feeling is a-ok in my book.

There was no sexual equality in the medieval world. However, the vast majority of women were busty, clear-skinned playboy bunnies who'd have sex with you in exchange for giving them flowers. Don't let anyone tell you that's an element added to the story just to caterer to the fantasies of a specific demographic.

Because if that were true, then you could legitimately ask why the Witcher can bend reality over a barrel to satisfy the presumed desires of straight, male gamers, but gender inequality is simply not allowed because it's not historically accurate.

The point is, Seagloom seems to be philosophically opposed to games like the Witcher/Witcher 2.  In fact, I recall she mentioned that she has a copy of the game given to her by a friend, yet she hasn't even opened the package.

Her primary reason for disliking the game seems to stem from the fact that the Witcher locks you into playing a male character, as well as the game's "perceived" sexism.......and the Witcher 2 hasn't changed in that regard.

Thus said, I wonder why she constantly criticizes a game that she's likely never going to play anyway.

Pure fail.  The Witcher is a FANTASY WORLD with abundant Medieval influences.  It's not a direct copy of any particular historical era.

I didn't see you complaining that DA2 "bends reality" to satisfy female gamers by having female warriors covered in plate armor and swinging swords bigger than they are.

With that said, the Witcher World was created by a man, and the games were created by men as well.  Also, the primary audience for the Witcher are men.

And since most men prefer attractive women to unattractive ones, I don't see why it's such a bad idea to have the primary female NPCs be attractive.

Do not remember that in game then again I didn't bother going for the sex cards really. =O

I went for all of them but couldn't finish the game because of my loading times kept getting longer... and longer... and longer...

Yes, there was a girl outside of the first city you could have sex with if you gave her flowers.

Then there should be no problem with having gender equality. Glad you agree with me!

'Tis true, I never opened the package because games locking me into a male protagonist role rarely interest me nowadays. I have enjoyed a number of games with male protagonists in the past, such as "Planescape: Torment", and I am currently plodding through "Alpha Protocol." "The Witcher" is low on my backlog partly for its male protagonist, partly because I have a pile of fantasy titles I rather play before it, and partly due to the game's premise never piquing my interest.

I never said I disliked the game--only that I am not keen on playing it. Any criticisms I make are based on information I can glean from screenshots or read online. I also once challenged the idea that TW2 and DA2 are truly comparable in a random thread floating around "Off Topic". Gameplay wise, I think the only criticism I made was that TW2 did not seem as tactical as some are claiming, and that "Skyrim" would likely blow its tactical aspect out of the water anyway.

I am not philosophically opposed to the Witcher as a game. Heck, I like several of REH's stories, and own a bunch of Mongoose's Conan tabletop books. Grittiness is not a barrier to my enjoying something as long as I feel it makes *some* sense, and is not included to appeal to the lowest common denominator. What I *am* philosophically opposed to is the pretense that CD Projekt RED has no gender bias in its portrayal of women. Just because the Witcher takes place in a medieval dystopia does not mean those design choices, and the words their writer chose to describe the game's female characters, are above reproach.

Even Triss, who started off okay prior to the marketing blitz, has a meta note describing how she is cool about her "Playboy" spread. If the idea is to show other women they have no chance at capturing Geralt's affections, then why is she posing for a *men's* magazine?

In short (too late!) I see no reason to hold back critcism, and I hardly see my criticisms as unfairly prejudicial or unwarranted.

Yep The Witcher 2 is going to be the game to beat. CD project like what they said in the article posponed releasing the game till they got it right, all the way to redoing the entire game engine, knowing that such a decision would cost them money, but in the end they knew they would be puting out a product that they could be proud of and impress the hell out of their fans of the game franchise. Only if Bioware did not push out DA2 before it's time, maybe we all would be talking about DA2 in a positive epic sense instead of all the negativity about it.

It just goes to show when you have a large major company like EA runnig your release dates and telling you what to do you lose in the end. To be a well crafted epic RPG it has to be slowing crafted and done right, not quickly slabbed together, and advertised and over-hyped just to be in reality a dead horse.

Skyrim just got bumped.

Edit:  The "women of Witcher 2" article is much less impressive.  I'll stick to ogling the pretty trees and waterfalls.  And the Geralt.

Don't like, don't play, this series doesn't have to cater to your particular brand if it didn't promise so, which can't be said about Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

Damn fan girls...

How was Rift btw? Was there good end game content? Is it doing well for a MMO?
