I still don't see why having romantic choices/variety is such a bad thing if it is optional.
The Asari (well, those who trained it) are better biotics than humans, at least according to the official lore.
It stands to reason that humanity is generally the jack-of-all-trades and that this mission required specialists.
And some of the companions were propably recruited to keep Shepard smiling. (yes, that smile)
