I found a way to get it to work on my Win 7 64bit Home Premium install.

I wanted to do a run through on ME 1 that did everything I could and had every choice the way I wanted for import into ME 2 and ultimately ME3. So....when I went to install ME 1, it seemed to install right but it would crash on the config screen. I was like "great, that sucks....now I am going to have to switch over to that crappy Vista 32bit HD to do this...and I HATE Vista." I googled some "fixes" for a while that other people had posted to no avail. I tried installing 1.02 and it said it couldn't verify my license. I also tried installing the DLC that had it, Pinnacle Station, and it said the same thing.

Here is the deal. I started poking around the install to see what was different/missing and low and behold there was some stuff missing....namely most of the stuff that is suppose to be in "My Documents". I was like great...way to go microsoft. Thanks for changing the pathways.

Here is what I did. I still had the install done on my other HD, which was Vista Ultimate 32bit. I copied my "Mass Effect" folder in "My Documents" from that install and pasted them in "My Documents" in my Win 7 install and let them combine/merge/over write. At that point it finally let me install Bring Down the Sky. After that I installed Pinnacle Station which has the 1.02 in it. I then ran the config. Voila! It worked!

The only thing that was weird was the graphics settings in game didn't accept the config settings I imputted at first when I ran the game. It had a 1280x800 limit (or something similar 16:9). I was like what the heck? So I maxed the settings out there, hit apply, then exited out of the game. I ran the config again and put it at my native res of 1680x1050 and set the values where I wanted them. This time when I ran the game they stuck.

I don't know why the game has different issues for different people but I hope this helps others like me that had this issue. It does require you to have a good install somewhere to copy from but at least it works. Here are my system specs for reference...
