For your companions and from experience which way do you go to help your companions? 
Do you garner rivalry in an attempt to help amend their ways or make their life into something?
Or do you support them in what they do, and be there for them when they need someone?

For example my choices:

Aveline: Friendship, mainly because she's already dedicated to her job and can handle it well enough without being pushed.

Varric: Friendship, because while it seems he can be lazy, he looks out for everyone as best he can.

Merrill: Rivalry, just so she can give up Blood Magic, and move on. Rivalmance for my Female Hawkes

Anders: Rivalry, just so I can see the Awakening Anders a bit more. Rivalmance for Male Hawkes for more references

Fenris: Rivalry, if not mage to try and show him mages arn't ALWAYS bad. Friendship if mage, to prove him wrong in his judgment. (Freaking Kirkwall Mages) 

Isabela: Friendship, because she's just mainly there as a debt and pulls her weight and helps others. 

Sebastian: Rivalry, pushing him to be an ambitious prince may lead to consequences on both our behalves but knowing the Chantry will crumble, and how Sebastian automatically defects to his rivalry path (in my opinion) if Hawke doesn't put the smack down on Anders..Softens the blow of the ending I think

Carver: Friendship, mainly because the guy's so freaking well written I WANT to be his friend. XD
Bethany: I don't think you CAN get rivalry with her.

What is your ideal best path for your companions?

Friendship for most except for Fenris and Sebastian.

I love the rival path with Carver; it makes those moments where the sibling bonding shines through even more epic.

Aveline: Friend. I haven't tried rivalry with her only ever picked up a few rival points when asking for money.

Varric: Friend. Picked up a few rival points with aggressive Hawke but still ended up as friends.

Isabela: Friend. Suits my usual play style of sarcastic with a love for profit. Although I always kill Castillion.

Bethany: Friend. It can be fun to tease her but could never be cruel.

Merrill: Friend. I have no problem with blood magic and I think her clan are stupid for being afraid of her. Trying to rivalmance her for the first time so maybe I'll change my mind.

Anders: Rival. I enjoy making him angry, turning Feynriel into an abomination was particularly funny. Though I wish he wouldn't assume my blood mage Hawke was pro-templar.

Fenris: Rival. I usually play pro-mage so friending him doesn't make sense. His mage hate is a bit mental so I think he needs to be told to get over himself.

Carver: Rival. After playing as a rogue and keeping Bethany it was strange having such a different relationship with Carver but it was pretty interesting.

Sebastion: I can't seem to get full friend or rival with Sebastion so I'm not sure which is best.


I don't really think about which path is best for the companion I just think which is going to suit my current Hawke. (e.g. blood mage Hawke would friend Merrill but rival Fenris and Anders)

I don't think rivalry is really the best path for Fenris. He confronts his anger on the friendship path too. He also seems happier with Hawke as a friend and less lonely.

Otherwise I always end up friends with every one except Merril and Anders. It doesn't do much for Anders, but Merril at least realizes what the mirror cost her and stops practicing blood magic.

I did friendship for my first playthrough. I'm on my second now, near the end and annoyingly there are some companions that are hovering in between friendship and rivalry. Merrill is one. Goddamit.

I do friendship for everyone but Fenris, Sebastian and Merrill. Merrill is the only one where rivalry is pretty unequivocally better for her personally. Anders the most contentious, depending on whether you think it's better he be personally "happy" but basically cannibalized by Justice, or miserable but fighting (and probably losing) to retain his individuality. The rest pretty much just depend on whether or not your Hawke would get along with them.

Aveline, Varric - friendship.
Isabela - friendship. I like her as she is.
Merril and Anders - after trying rivalry with them, I don't think I'll do friendship with them ever again. On rivalry at least they get to understand that they are wrong and try to change.
Fenris - either way, I don't see much difference in his personality anyways whatever route I choose.
Bethany - friendship.
Carver - rivalry, it feels natural somehow.
Sebastian - I don't care for him enough to bother which route is better for him. Usually befriend him though.
