Look, I'll be the first to say that there's no way in hell human's are the only intelligent life to have existed in our universe... but do you appreciate the immense implausibility of 2 sentient life forms existing at the same point in time in the universe?
Humanity's existence in the scope of time frame as to how long the universe has existed is shorter than the blink of an eye... when we're extinct, even if that isn't for hundreds of thousands of years.. we'll still have only existed in the universe for less than a nano second as far as the scale of time is concerned for the universe.
Our existence and the existence of other species is too small for there to be a reasonable expectation that we would co-exist in the same time frame long enough to even be aware of one another's existence.
Stars themselves are born & die constantly throughout the universe... what relevance of time spent in existence do you think any life form, let alone humans, have on that scale? None... we barely exist as is... our species could live for another million years and it wouldn't even be a drop in the bucket of time.
The odds of our species existing at the same time as another species is so close to zero that statistically speaking it might as well be zero.

That music is horrible. What a silly video.
I don't know what to think of this video, but I found this particular post to be pretty funny. For those of you who don't know, the song in the video is "Lux Aeterna", done by Clint Mansell, who just so happens to be the composer for Mass Effect 3. If you think THAT music is horrible, I suggest you refrain from listening to the ME3 Soundtrack marshalleck.

This entire post is predicated on assumptions which have no basis in fact, other than time is long and our lives are short. You cannot even approximately calculate the odds of two sentient races existing at the same time in the universe without knowing the value of so many other variables which we cannot even begin to quantify now.Hathur wrote...

Unerstand, we are just now beginning to detect the existence of planets orbiting stars nearby in our own galaxy, so we can't even quantify the possibility of any life outside our own solar system. And the data we receive from other stars is years to thousands of years old by the time we see it. I also think you forget how big the universe is. For every year of the universe's existence, there are many many stars. Presumably there are more planets, planetoids, etc. than stars. Furthermore, we have no clue as to how many different environments can produce intelligence. Therefore it's illogical to make any decrees about the statistical probability of intelligent life.
In fact, given the number of stars in the universe, it could be quite possible there is other intelligent life right now. Intelligent life could be common. Even if there were one intelligent race per galaxy, that's a lot of intelligent life. But it would likely be so far away as to make any detection of or interaction with them impossible forever, without a fundamental change in our understanding of the laws of physics.

Very interesting, I believe we'll be making "first contact" soon. At least one that is public.

I just think your post was creative. Right now we're at a point where any theory, as dumb as it sounds could be true. No one can pick fact from fiction with the limited info the public has. You can be wrong or right, no one can say otherwise unless proof is given. I don't believe anyone here has the credentials to say you or Hathur is wrong.

The thing is, at least you admit that the song was good in the first place. All that I'm saying is that having Clint around bodes well for ME3, even if Wall had to be scrapped, however unfortunate that was.

I wasn't putting forward any theory at all. All I did was note the limited info available to us based on our lack of ability to reliably measure the universe. Just suggesting what you said: That we can't know at this point, and as long as we can't know, the truth has no bearing on our perception of reality. I certainly wasn't suggesting that ET does exist. Just noting that the real answer either way has no effect on us presently.Sinnerous wrote...

Maybe I read too into it, or I was tired. Either way I can agree with your statement.

@ Sinnerous: But do you believe? i was inspired by your op to look up that radio host from the video, and I think I remember hearing him on the radio a few times at night when I used to travel a lot. Some pretty crazy theories. I always feel sorry for people who for whatever reasons have convinced themselves of some impending alien invasion or Armageddon. And I HATE the losers who exploit these poor people. Anyone who propagates lies to troubled and vulnerable people for their own material gain should be imprisoned, crime or not.
As if aliens are a lie. Some of that footage was pretty amazing to see. I don't think all of that could have been faked. The size of the universe or our galaxy alone should be evidence enough that there is intellegent life out there.
