Random Experience Gain?

I don't get how it is determined how much experience you gain from a fight.

Just as an example: During Act 2 you can visit the newly opened Passage on Sundermount.
The first encounter is a single Stone Golem that gives you (Chinmaster has the Lion of Orlais equipped so 2% extra exp gain) 246 Exp or something like that. The next two encounters feature around 6 normal level Shades or Corpses, 4 low Level examples of them, a Stone Golem, Revenant and at least one of those encounters even feature a Rage Demon. So what that should give a real boost of Exp right?
No, both encounters gave me each around 286 Exp. So 6 normal Level Shades/Corpses, 4 low Level Shades/Corpses, a Revenant and a Rage Demon together give you 40 Exp, if a Stone Golem still gives you 246 Exp.
Or does the Exp amount you get differ, if the encounter is much more difficult since you now don't have to just face a single Stone Golem?
I really don't get if there is any kind of rule applied or if an internal dice gets rolled Oo

Another example is the fight sequence when you have to kill Leech and his gang (the conclusion quest of nightly encounters in the docks during Act 1).
The first encounter in the warehouse covers Leech and several normal and low Level enemies and I think you get 66 Exp for them all There are  two additional encounters featuring 2 waves each i guess of low and normal Level enemies. All in all you get ~180 exp for those encounters (including the first encounter with Leech). The final encounter features 4 normal Level enemies at the exit of the warehouse and for those 4 you get ~160 Exp.
So 180 Exp for one elite, around 8 normal and 8 low Level, but 160 for 4 normal Level enemies?

The exact numbers of enemies might differ a bit, but they should be close enough to the real numbers.

I've experienced similar random Exp gains a lot of times during the game, and I'm not really fond of this random gain "mechanic".  Sometimes I didn't even gain any Exp for encounters ... EDIT: Like during the final encounter in the room with the Nexus Golem: There are like 5 or 6 Waves with normal Level Shades and Abominations, Rage Demons, one Arcane Horror, one Desire Demon and a Revenant. I think there are about 12 or 16 Shades and Abominations. So what do I gain from those fights: 0 Exp and as always really good loot Oo.
I tried this several times and I always gained no experience so... awesome Oo
Since I already complained that the loot drop is so unrewarding this just adds to the "unrewarding battle experience" feeling I always get.

Thoughts, own experiences or even a different oppinion?

Yep, safe to say I've experienced it and I hate it too.
I much preferred the old exp from each kill floating above the head of the person who killed it system.

One of the more frustrating things for me is the way the xp for traps seems to depend whether you're in combat or not. e.g. you get 153xp from disarming a trap while not in combat and then when you disarm another trap of the same difficulty as well as killing several enemies you end up with less xp. After that I started waiting to disarm them after the battle unless they were in too inconvenient a spot..

edit: I just saw an unintential pun I made.. "experienced it" ahaha

Everything is designed to a fault, even the ammount of experience. You can tell they altered paticular encounters by giving some difficult fights crap experience. This whole game is scripted, especially the levels you are allowed to gain.

Wow Sundermount in Act 2 is really breakin' my balls right now. The first encounter when you go up the slope to the top of the mountain contains 8 normal level corpses 4-6 low level corpses and a Shadow Assassin. Experience gain 0.

I really can't see why they scripted it the way they did. The only reason to script exp gain is to make difficult fights more rewarding because a fight can be more challenging than pure numbers might suggest, but not less rewarding Oo

I always want to hit something if I fight like a berserker and gain 0 exp in a tough fight just to stumble upon a plant and gain 200 exp. I really deserved those 200 exp with my gardening skills, those fights are just chores but I like my gardening.

lol, you notice alot of after thought half-assed changes in certain spots. They did these because of the production schedule. Its just to keep level in line with items like cold blooded, which is worthless when compared to cheap or free random staves at the same item level that have better base damage and cost 100g less.

is there any rule behind it ? i mean fat that a simple fight can give as much as multiwave one is known. However do you get more exp by lets say redoing the fight or if you "beak" the encounter by pulling away and going out of combat between waves?
@Uniques are only good for certain levels. If you do min-max you often outgrow unique before you can get next one. DLC (green) items are much stronger then any other items and least much longer.

Huh. 0 exp for a fight? That is really lame.

Regarding multi-waves in general, I did test two encounters to discover if "waiting out" the additional spawns summoned by the enemy leader was worthwhile compared to just icing it.

They were assistant mage you encounter doing Fenris personal quest in Act II (Hannah-something) and an escaped mage (who helps children but becomes an abomination anyway).
In both cases, grinding out the encounter till all the waves had been summoned and then killing the main enemy yielded more exp. I figured that behavior applied equally to all encounters- but this discussion of fixed XP to encounter makes me doubt that.

Another rewarding fight: Killing Meredith's Deathsquad during the Noble Agenda Quest gave not a single Experience Point.

I also like those sequences when you see that a lot of loot is dropped by enemies but because of some videosequences and "Yeahhh just leave this dump" comments from your companions you leave the place never to return. Like during Fenris encounter with Denerius as well as the fight right in front of Viscount Keep against a horde of Qunaris right before the finale of Act 2 and the fight right before that, where you save Orsino.

If you keep in mind, that you also gain 0 exp during the Last Holdouts quest fights (the "opposite" quest if you favored Meredith in the beginning of Act 3), it's just fair I guess... the Meredith quest also has two separate enemy encounters and both give 0 exp so... Noble Agenda is indeed a bit less unrewarding :?

I just got 0 from the nexus gauntlet...
I got like ~200+ after from the evil tome fight though. Not sure what the deal the deal is with that.
Meh, I got a pretty solid time and that's all that matters :)
