A moderator should really move this thread out of this section. There's more spoilers in this thread than I can count.

On to my point... I think Bioware should have made it more omnipresent that there might be something about Kirkwall itself that explains the high level of aberrant mages. If there was a questline that helped the protagonist discover this aspect, like unearthing another mystery, that would be really cool. Kind of like a 'Da Vinci Code' subplot.

Otherwise it's too easy to conclude that all mages are crazy demon infested abominations, for no reason other than that they are oppressed. Which is not as a compelling story, imo.

There are alot of stated opinions in this thread and others that only see the mage/templar conflict at a superficial level. There is more depth there that I think was intended but not well-executed.

I completely agree.

For me, the Engima of Kirkwall Codex entries were among the most interesting pieces of the game. At times I was more interested in them than the goings-on in the actual game.

In general, I think I fall down slightly on the pro-mage side, but I've done a pro-templar playthrough too.

I justified it with the "trying to keep order" reasoning. If Hawke "saves" the mages, it's probably only temporary until the Chantry inevitably sends more templars into Kirkwall. In addition, the citizens may well riot against the Circle following *that event*.

Also, by the end of act 3, Hawke had plenty of reason to think that there was definitely something in the air abominizing Kirkwall mages left, right and centre. That alone wasn't clear cut enough for me however, since a significant cause of the mage-crazy was likely the heavy-handed approach under Meredith.
