The way I understand it, Dragon Age was never meant to be a series like Mass Effect. Each game was to take place in the same world, but be independent. For example, Neverwinter Nights was not a sequel to Baldur's Gate which was not a sequel to Eye of the Beholder, but they all took place in D&D's Forgotten Realms. Each game features different characters, but some, like Blackstaff or Flemeth, make their presence felt in each game.
Bioware has said that while ME3 will be Shepard's last game, it won't be the last game set in that universe. It'll be curious to see fan reactions to new heroes or new game genres set in the ME universe.
Perhaps instead of being titled "Dragon Age II," which suggests "sequel," the game should have been "Dragon Age: The Enigma of Kirkwall" or "Dragon Age: No ****, There I Was."
How much of the hate for DA2 is because it is a sequel to DA:O?

DA2 by itself would not be such a bad game. Bad for Bioware? Yes. Not worth what I paid for it? Yes. In no means a worthy sequel for Origins? Yes. But not an overall bad game. In no means a GOOD game, but not a bad one either.
Decent. Something I play on a rainy day when I have nothing else to do.
I can't help but feel if they released the game as part of DA franchise but not as the offical sequel, like as Dragon Age: Kirkwall, I would've been a lot happier because in truth, I don't mind they were trying to do different things, but it was just plain sad a sequel.

Absolutely, I agree. The major problem I felt with DA2, was that they were trying to recreate the whole cinematic experience and the games all falling in together into one big climax in DA3 like they are doing with DA2. The problem with that is just as you said, Dragon age was NEVER meant to a series like Mass Effect.Abispa wrote...

Agreed. DA wasn't Fantasy ME. Never meant to be. And I don't have an issue with playing Dragon Age: Tales of the Free Marches.
The DA series, as far as I can see is about Thedas. The countries, the races, the politics etc. DA II did an excellent job as a prologue to a "Thedas in flames" scenario, but thats it
As far as Origins vs DAII?
What did Origins give me? It gave me a sprawling rambling adventure, 80 hours of gameplay, lots of lovely loot, marvellous codex entries, a couple of interesting companions, and the feeling that I was a character in an epic.
DA II gave me a much more human hero, better companions and a much more coherent backdrop of a world falling apart. But it also took away the loot, the exploration and the feeling of being in an epic.
The feeling I get is is that for DAO, the team said, ok lets stuff this stocking for the fans, give them lots and lots of stuff we think they like - and lets try to do it right, even if it takes longer than usual.
With DA II - the feeling I get is - we need atleast a 50 million (or whatever) contribution from DAII to bolster that last quarter results.
I really wouldn't have minded waiting another year for a longer, more coherent game.

I think standing alone, the game would of got more positive critism. It will NEVER escape the comparison to DA:O, simply because it was released as it's sequel.

Am of the opinion that some (definitely not all, there are after all many other reasons people don't like the game) of the perception gamers had of Dragon Age II would have been different if it wasn't called Dragon Age... II.
Like calling it instead Dragon Age: Exodus

Yeah everything said in the OPs sums it up there, but if it was named something else or was its own game, I think people would have second thoughts about purchasing it. At the time when I finished Origins, I was begging for more, and I guess Dragon Age II (because of the 2) made me want to buy it. The game itself was not bad, but because of the general audience's expectations from Bioware, people generally disliked or hated it.

I dislike it because it is called a sequel, yes.
