I've recently reinstalled Dragon Age: Origins, installed all of the DLC, installed patch 1.04, and started several new games.  When I first reach Lothering and the battle with the highwaymen is just beginning, the game freezes and locks up my computer.  It happens everytime within the first few seconds of the battle no matter what I do in the game.  I have just gotten the notices of updating my codex for Lothering and opened the area of Lothering, then it runs a couple of seconds and freezes up.  This never happened before in any of the games I've played previously, but I've never had any DLC before.  I have to unplug my computer to get out of it, but it continues to happen each time I come back

Help!

I am experiencing the same problem. Win 7 64bit, Quad core i7 920, Radeon 6970 graphics card, 12gb memory. I cannot get into Lothering as the game freezes. I am playing as Mage.

There is a pinned post on what should go into problem reports. You can review that, or I wrote an older version myself, here:

RaenImrahl's version has replaced the one Victor had written so long ago that I felt was useless . .

I should mention also that my Dragon Age Ultimate Edition was bought from Steam. The game is totally unplayable because of these problems :(

I should add that a rather high percentage of buyers with Vista and or Win 7 OSes have serious stability problems with patches 1.03 / 1.04, and it's very difficult to stop at 1.02A, the last good one for those buyers, when you have digital versions, other than the one from the EA Store, which the sellers' software will typically update to the newest patches almost immediately.

A rather easy way to get around that is to swap the Steam version for the EA digital version (no cost).

Well - it's a serious problem as most users are Win 7 user (or at least Vista). I will have to try to ask for a refund from Steam. Really disappointed.

Many people play the game from Steam without issues like you've described.  I would suggest you first use the Steam installer to verify your files' integrity.  Also, have you added any mods to the game?

I see you have Ultimate Edition... have you tried to patch the game?  If so, that can cause issues, since UE is already patched to verison 1.04.

Another possibility could be your video drivers... try doing a clean uninstall/reinstall using the method linked below in my sig.

In the final result, something could have gotten screwed up in the installation.  If you opt for it, you could do a complete uninstall and reinstall.  You should reboot between removing the program and installing it again.

Actually, VERY FEW real PC Game players ever stuck with Vista.  It was far too problematic at first, and when Win 7 arrived, very many experienced game players held onto Windows XP as a proven OS, by installing Win 7 as a dual boot choice.  As I pointed out, EA will let you download their digital version to replace the Steam one, and with it, you can be more picky about patches.

It is the ultimate edition, so I have all the mods installed that was included in the Ultimate Edition.

Steam patches their games automatically.

Just installed my GPU drivers fresh today, as ATI updated their Driver recently-

If you opt for it, you could do a complete uninstall and reinstall.

I am re-installing the game now.

I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever with any games in Windows 7 64-bit. This is the first time. I find it hard to believe that many people still use XP.

As I pointed out, EA will let you download their digital version to replace the Steam one, and with it, you can be more picky about patches.

That sounds something I should try out, how can I download the digital version of EA to replace my Steam one?

Thanks for the help.

I only know it's possible. My provider doesn't bundle the "good" broadband with the landline / basic TV Cable / Internet package~~ only a 384 / 256 version, so I just don't buy digital stuff. I buy the retail disk instead.

Kepha probably covered it here:

Kepha's FAQ about various (DA) DLC problems:

Go to EA.com and look for the EA Download manager. That said, I do not believe you have an option about using patch 1.04 with Ultimate Edition.

I just checked information about it, it seems that _all_ Ultimate Editions of Dragon Age are already patched to 1.04.

Okay. When you updated your graphics drivers, did you go into safe mode and get rid of the old ones first?

Also, have you completed the re-installation?

Okay, it seems re-installing the game did the trick. The game is working now. Thanks for the help!
