I think that in ME2, Ash/ Kaidan is already a Spectre and that's why no one would tell us what they were doing with their lives now. They didn't have the symbol on their armor but that could have just been a means for us not to figure it out.

Maybe they got up to some serious top secret operations when Shepard wasn't about. They didn't do anything of real note (Spectre noteworthy that is) without him/her around. Could be cool if you find out in ME3 that they did all this badass stuff. Still I do like the whole affirmative action theory and they could even focus on them feeling unworthy. Garrus obviously fits the promotion better than any other squadmate though, wonder if that'll get brought up.

When u play me3 demo u hear kaiden talking to anderson telling that he hopes everything was ok,i assume he just finished exams for spectre or smth like that.Kaiden is great spectre ,he is more thinking person who won't kill aliens cause they dnt have elbows and smell bad, unless they eat children.But no way ashley can be same rank as shepard,gtfo my f ship.

exactly! crap i dont know the term...not concept art...but not a ingame shot....just a render with a few characters using the same tech as ingame stuff? you know what i mean.
as far as we know the entire VS spectre thing is something they are kicking around. as ive said many ah times. if VS first appearance in ME3 is as a spectre...im gonna be miffed!!! if it VS is promoted in ME3 I will be okay with it.
Cuz all evidence in ME2 points to VS not being spectres, rather they seem to be members of the Alliance investigating Cerberus...not Shepard specifically...perhaps Intelligence, Security Forces, or Internal Investigations division. ME3 happens months after the suicide mission and arrival...I HIGHLY doubt they could have done anything in that short of a time to rate the title.
And with what becoming a spectre meant in ME1 it would be CHEAP if Bioware went....
BOOM !!! Rise VS and become the Spectre you were destined to be! without a indepth story behind it.

They become Spectres. They are members of the Alliance military at the beginning, but they become Spectres later on. If it says so on the ME Wiki then it is so.

BW said they were Kaiden at least has one photo baring the spector seal. Anderson would still refer to them by their rank like he does with shep its the council who says spector so and so at curtain times. I think them as spectors is 0 believability and 100% political agenda most likely by Udina.

I kinda got a theory, if Shepard wasn't a Reinstated Spectre (didn't save the council) in Mass Effect 2, then Kaiden or Ashley became Spectres in Mass Effect 3 because the council would have been an all human council.
But if you are a Reinstated Spectre, then Kaiden/Ashley aren't Spectres in Mass Effect 3.

Ah yes, replacement Spectres. I have dismissed this theory.
what did they do to deserve such a position? riding on Shep coat-tails? something done "off-screen"?
the Udina scheme/plot would make sense...but i dont like it. and i still think there better be a pretty long and uncomfortable conversation available in game for us who dislike it..to include the backstory of said horrendous appointment

not only. the stuff that happened off-screen got him selected to be evaluated for spectre position/training. stuff happened to expedite the proper procedures.

as i said they don't have Spectre status in the begining of the game but later they will and you will be able to kill them,after the battle of the Citadel the council was afraid to enlist new Spectre "Garrus tell you that",so no Kaiden/Ashley is not Spectre
