I had fun playing ME2... not as much as with ME1 but still. Maybee that was the point of it? Nah, that would be riaddichio, a game that's fun to play.

Storywise? You did some quite important choices it would seem (unless ME3 plans to follow the retcon road). Spoiling ME2: You had to chose Legion's fate, Tali's fate, tell the Quarians your opinion on fighting the Geth - those decisions sound like they could affect what happens in the Geth vs. Quarian conflict. You got to decide if the genophage cure was to be developed further or destroyed. You had the chance to give a doomsday weapon to a madman or destroy it. I'm pretty satisfied with that if BioWare can follow those threads.

I'd be interested in seeing if some of those seemingly "paragon" choices muck things up in a way you don't expect.  Like if you saved the Queen only to have them become a new threat in ME3.  I highly doubt BioWare would throw curveballs like that though.

I looked into it, and you're right. It's still very vague, since it does not tell us why the team is split up.

Sounds to me like an excuse to re-introduce them throughout the game instead of simply being by Shepard's side from the start. Shepard's trial, for instance. Shepard is taken in, the Normandy is confiscated, and the Cerberus crew and the allies Shepard gathered are all told to GTFO.

You could assume that since Shepard got arrested, everyone else just gtfoed to avoid jail?

Uh well I havn't seen that yet, and a husk isn't exactly a willing participant.  Meaning they could be fighting right along side the council races.

it was probably a filler game. That doesn't mean it wasn't a great game.

Yeah, but since that was suposed to be the last queen where else would they get rachni to huskificate them if not from there? Of course that would mean a player that killed the queen will never fight rachni husks... so it's safe to assume that BioWare will do a classic asspull and say that Reapers had more Rachni stored somewhere. And it would obviously make so much sense that nobody would notice how stupid it is.

just because you killed the queen, that doesnt mean every rachni in the galaxy died at that very second. im sure the reapers have a few of every race stored away somewhere, maybe. or maybe bioware is losing their grip on this franchise.

can we rename this threads title to "bioware sucks at making sequals"

The same place they get Husks of other races, they attack, with the help of the Heretics I assume or indoctrinated, and impal whatever Rachni they come across.  Doesn't exactly mean that the Queen and her flock are against the council races.

I personally don't have a problem with this and pretty much expected it. You gathered a team in ME 2 with the express purpose of fighting the Collectors.  Once that job is over it isn't hard to see the team splitting up since they have no indication of when the Reapers are ever likely to show up.

Besides I kinda like the idea of it just being Shepard again, a person single minded in his/her quest to defeat the Reapers whilst everyone else does their best to ignore/deny the threat that is coming.   I am hoping in ME 3 that Shepard will go to his "favourite store on the Citadel" and buy some party plates for all the humongous amounts of crow a lot of people are going to be eating when good ole Harby bangs on the door going "herrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeee's the Reapers".

Having said that I can see why some would object to the fact that the crew has disbanded, but for me personally I quite like the idea.

It was pretty obvious that once Shepard is taken into custody the others will go to mind their own business (What were they supposed do to? The Normandy is taken by the Alliance, there is no where for them to stay) until Shepard calls them back unless they have important stuff to do and cannot come back. We will get some of them back. Let's analyse:

Miranda/Jacob: Quit Cerberus and might join with the Alliance or go somewhere where they can help fighting Reapers or they could very well return.
Mordin: Is on Salarian Homeworld. He might return after we deal with the problems Salarians have or stay to help Salarians with preparations for the Reapers.
Garrus: Is back b*tches.
Tali: Might go to Flotila or somwhere else if she was exiled and we just recruit her.
Samara: She said she will leave after the mission (If Shep is a good friend and paragon she will say that he can count on her if he needs her)
Thane: Is dying and would probably like to spend the rest of his life with his son to catch up especially with the close future not looking very bright.
Grunt: Will return to Tuchanka to learn more about himself and help Clan Urdnot prepare for the war.
Jack: She doesn't give a sh*t about the fight. She will probably leave on a mission to destroy Cerberus so we might be able to recruit her again.
Zaeed/Kasumi: Hired, got their money and finished their jobs. Not coming back.
Legion: Deals with Geth/Quarian conflict and might rejoin after solving it.

Looking back on it now, Mass Effect 2 seemed like filler or at least glorified rising action, at least in terms of the Reaper threat. Mass Effect 2's threat still involved the Reapers, but it really only concerned humanity. In my opinion, the second game only set the stage for the third. However, as a trilogy, the third installment will be the climax! The resolution! The second part in any trilogy is always less important, but it always puts everything into place for the final battle.

Mass Effect 2 was sort of pointless in that it only set up the stage, but that's the point.

I never suggested the rachni fighting alongside the Reapers. I'm only saying that if you haven't saved the queen there are no Rachni the reapers could turn into husks.

There's also a way to justify why the Reapers couldn't possibly store away Rachni before ME3 happens:
Rachni are organic beings that evolved during the same cycle humans and other sentient species did. They were most likely indoctrinated to attack the council space by Sovereign's influence or with help from the Collectors because there were no other Reapers that were able to reach them (all except Sovereing were in the dark space). Collectors had gathered races - yes, it is possible that they stored Rachni before Krogans erased them from the galaxy's face but even then, they couldn't just send those to Reapers because there can't be a way to send stuff from the galaxy's core to the dark space (if such a way would exist the Reapers could come back anytime during ME2 or even ME1 by using that) - changing that would be an asspull.

There are quite few loopholes that can be used to prevent this from being utterly dumb:
a) collectors did store Rachni, huskified them and then stored them somewhere else than their base in the galaxy's core so the Reapers could acces that stockpile during
B) collectors or Sovereign stored Rachni's genetic code or something and Reapers were able to clone them, this would actulay make sense.
c) possibly some more that I stoped bothering to think of.

Maybe the point was to stop the Collectors from abducting human colonies. Or maybe it was to explain what happens between the events of Mass Effect 1 and the Reaper Invasion. More likely, the point was to make money for Bioware.

I hate to break it to everyone, but ME2 is pointless. Like all the middle games in a trilogy, they are usually pointless, but there are reasons for a second game. There are couple reasons why they aren't completely useless, but needed, for example:
1) The last game in any series is never as good as the original, but to make up for it, the developers make filler games in which they can improve the final one. Such as graphics or game engine, ect.
2) Most games don't really explain much of the details in the first game, so the second game in the series is to explain A LOT of detail. Sometimes too much.
3) Most game developers think the second game will automatically be as good as the first, so never perceive what you can't see in the future. By that meaning, the developer, such as Bioware in this case, wanted to expand its audience by implementing things that a normal RPG wouldn't have had.
So to answer your question, to a first time gamer of the series, ME2 wasn't pointless, but to an avid player of the series, such as myself, found it very pointless and badly done in comparison to ME1.

Those guys signed on to stop the collectors, except Garrus and Tali who will see things through to the end. That whole tight knit group from ME1 wanted to stop the reapers. The ME2 crew was in for the collectors only. I think that's why we're seeing the ME1 guys all reunite again on the same ship.

It seems pointless because ME2 didn't achieve anything we didn't already know from finishing ME1.

The reapers are still coming. Nothing has changed. The collectors were a minor detour at best. Considering the fact that more than half (perhaps even 3/4) of the ME2 cast won't be returning, ME2 was pointless aside from some of the DLC like SotSB and Arrival, which I'm sure would have been mentioned anyway going into ME3.

Its a real shame too because I grew quite fond of some of the ME2 cast. Grunt was one of my favorites, as was Thane and Samara.

Well, in ME3 Shepherd will need help from civilizations instead of individuals... It kind of makes me wonder why he didn't do so in ME2 while knowing the reapers are the real threat, not the collectors.

The Rachni will probably be one of the "races" you recruit to fight the reapers assuming you saved the Queen.

On another note:
You mean Bioware made a filler game (Mass Effect 2) for more money? Yes, Bioware is a business they are looking for profit and in this case they produced Mass Effect 2. Don't get me wrong it is a great game and I like the improvements made from the first game (step up in graphics, smoother gameplay, cover system-but no crouch-WTF, cooler weapons, mainstreamed customization system) but let's get real only a handful of choices you made will actually count toward the third game. Arrival however will probably be very important considering that's where ME3 will begin. Yes, it's sad to see most characters come in ME2 & go in ME3 but at least Bioware had some sense and dragged characters like Wrex and Garrus through the trilogy even if they were kicking and screaming along the way. Look, the way I see it Bioware had a great idea with Mass Effect but they went in the wrong direction. ME3 is just going to be a grand-scale ME2, recruiting civilizations and races rather than individual characters. They could have spent some serious time after Mass Effect and planned at least 5 games with a substantial amount of plot. It's like if you had 30 math problems for homework; you did the first ten & the last five but skipped the fifteen in the middle. It just seems like the rushed ahead & skipped alot. Just a thought.

Eh no more pointless than ME1 was in ME2. And yes I'd love it if some paragon choices backfire, but I suspect that wont be the case. Save theX, well maybe they are easily indoctrinated. Saved the Y, the fleet is massively reduced in strength etc. I suspect instead everything paragon= everything good though.

I think it's not pointless. Even if the team has broken up I imagine it's because Shepard is on trial and I don't think Alliance would miss the opportunity of getting their hands on thieves, convicts, assasins, Geth and terrorists. Besides if they're in the game you can recruit them again and I don't see the need for the introduction again nor for any LM.

That's not true. Cerberus had Rachni who they couldn't control because they didn't have a queen, the choice of killing the queen or letting her live had nothing to do with all the Rachni disappearing.

From what I have read from the information given and the interviews I think they are going to allow you to build the team you want. There will be a couple characters you have to have such as virmire survivor and this sanders fellow. Once you have them you can go an gather the teammates you want which in the long run makes sense so you can take your love interest and the ones you liked. This also helps the situation for those who lost teammates in the suicide run.
