you know, up until nov 2nd i was a huge MMO fan. why? well gee, maybe i couldnt have answered that before but now i can.

MMOs in a strict sense ARE RPGs, (somehow) and thats all that was coming out on PC.
i would frequent many sites talking about MMOs like massively and listen to podcasts about other MMOs etc...

pretty swank video game times right?

EFFING WRONG.

delusional is how i would best describe myself pre-DAO!!!

why is there 5 major MMOs running as we speak, about 10 decent free to play MMOs and about another 10 coming in the next couple years???

MONEY.

at some point we as a gaming community have said "i will gladly pay you all week for a day of video gaming right now."

why are we paying over and over for such thin experiences that are beyond repetitive???
when i played DAO i was blown away. and i remembered something that i had forgot...

i had forgotten that stories and great mythology can be crafted into something greater when your not trying to service thousands of people all on one server, vying for the same attention and little piece of land. the place where your NOT special anymore. the land of MMOs, where your a HERO, (just like everyone else). and we keep paying for that same experience over and over...

at least with a game like LotRO you are getting content every 3 months, you can actually justify paying over and over. but theres so many that just keep you on that treadmill dollar after dollar...

in an era where financial stability is futile, shouldnt we be spending our money more wisely?
it used to be everyone would pay to play 1 MMO. and it would be that one was on its way out, one in the middle and one recently new.
now theres 15 running and 10 more on the way.

WHERES OUR RPGs?

well no thanks to the money grabbers, they dont exist because everyone wants to be the next WoW... im not saying all MMOs are evil, just an RPG market that is 85% MMO and only 15% true CRPG. remember that? lol, "CRPG"...

what do we have coming for us? maybe the witcher 2? of course mass effect 2 and hopefully more DA down the road...

Good post man, lad to see some peple ar etting it.

I have played MMO's since before the term was coined (MUDs were the original MMOs) and obviously have gotten a lot of fun out of them. Still, nothing beats a proper RPG for great storytelling and just having fun with your character instead of getting all worked up over stats and gear and pwnage and whatnot.

I have no problem paying monthly installments for a game if i feel that I am getting value for my money. Sadly, as you have said, too many MMOs just suck awqay your cash with little to no return.

We can only hope that we stand on the threshhold of a great RPG re-emergence.

15 USD/month is not a lot of money by any stretch of the imagination (50 cents/day).

I myself have played and enjoyed various MMORPG's and have spent hundreds of hours playing them, and cannot wait for SWTOR.

That being said, you cannot and should not compare or replace CRPG's with MMORPG's as they are different animals.

When i plaed WoW on a daily basis I thought 15 bucks a month was fine, when i started playing it once a week..not so much.  i don;t think he is really comparing MMOs to RPGs, he is just happy to get his head out of the MMO-mud, look up and ealize there was a whole genre of gaming that he had forgotten was awesome.

SWTOR s definately worth soe anticipaton.

I've spent almost all of 2009 in LotRO.  Only MMO I'd play due to the Story and Lore.  Nothing else is appealing.  Flirted with Aion for a week and well - the story ain't Dragon Age.  In general I believe you are spot on.

Everyone looks for different things in a game. I play a few different types of games myself depending what entertainment I am looking for. It's all about entertainment, if people are willing to pay the money for a type of entertainment they will. MMO's are popular more so for the interaction with other players then anything. Yes a well done game with good story and game play is a must for a successful MMO, however community and playing with LOTS and LOTS of other people is the biggest draw to people playing an MMO. It's your money, as long as your entertained and happy with your purchase whats their to complain about? If you find your no longer getting your moneys worth from a service your paying for cancel it, like cable TV. I never watch TV myself so don't even bother paying for cable or satalite, yet there are people out there that can't live with out it. Same goes for games and MMO's.

mmo games get old pretty quick for me.

i mean take wow for instance, once you get to level 80 you just run the same dungeons day after day to farm for badges, or do the same battlegrounds over and over for honor. toss in the once a week raids and that about sums up the game.

after about a month of that im ready to quit.

i will admit ive renewed my sub several times out of boredom from no new good games being available, but it always ends up the same way. i level up to max level, farm junk for about a month and cancel out of boredom and being tired of dealing with the terrible online community it has.

exactly man!!! in stupid MMOs u r a hero who is not even special cus everybody else is a hero!!! MMOs have no story!!! how can there be when you kill a guy and he pops up again in 2 minutes? all you do is grind and do the same quest with a different title over and over for no reason....

then you are like "wtf this is dumb" so you join a guild and run some stupid dungeon that takes 2 hours getting yelled at the whole time by some A-hole looser who calls you a noob cus you cant do enough dps on the 4 horsemen. then you quit the guild and tell everybody to go F themselves in the old guild cus this new guild u just did naxxraumus in half the time of ur old guild.

then ur friends that you met while leveling all fall off the planet or start a new guy cus they have no clue how to do their job (tanking/healing/dpsing) so you have no more friends to talk about what porn you like to look at with so you get bored then start a new guy then one day ur 45 and ur like WTF!!!

then you meet some fat chick who talks about how horny she is all day so its cool again for like a minute til u realize she is like 25 and she is hitting on 13 year olds...

then bioware makes a good story driven rpg and you stop WOW and you take a shower, wash your face, get a job, meet some girls, get married and have hot steamy coco with your hot wife every night.

First of all, to the OP; welcome back to the true RPG realm.

Secondly, I feel that the costs of MMO's are worth the money. Howbeit, they are a different monster, even if they fit the RPG genre. They lack the immersion of a standard RPG but they do have massive worlds to explore and provide a great social network to group together and have fun.

Anyhow, as Crawling_Chaos said, it's about 50 cents a day. That's not a big expense, especially when you look at what's involved in maitaining a virtual world online. There is constant monitoring, fixes, tweaks, server/power costs, network costs and also a lot of new content always on the rise. The new content comes once every couple of months but there are a bunch of people working hard, everyday, to bring us that content. All of that costs money. And they also need to turn a profit. Afterall, that's what business is all about.

The choice of paying to play will vary from person to person. For someone who can only play a few hours a week, then maybe it's not worth it. But for someone who banks 20+ hours or so a week, the costs may be justified. It all comes down to personal choice. In the end, again, I think the costs are justified. Not too mention that I want to contribute to this industry. I love video games and they are worth every penny to me.

I'm still waiting for the ultimate RPG to come along. Preferably set in the D&D world; an epic game in the fashion of DA:O or Oblivion with online capabilities so a party of you and 3-5 other friends can explore the world and conquer the evil that striikes the land together. Just like a pen and paper D&D session.

I played that game i think it was called Neverwinter Nights.

Anyway I hear the OP. MMO's to me, feel too much like a time sync. Like i'm decaying while life flourishes around me.

Game companies have to pay out their arses because consumers demand such high production values (just look at all the whining going on with the graphics). They have to make money somehow - it's becoming impossible to profit by simply charging $50 - $60 a game and calling it a day. Thus we have entered the world of DLC and MMO.

Good grief...you drank the Kool-Aid.
The polar opposite is in fact the truth....extending the profitable lifespan is now the goal by nickel and diming you for what used to be called patched content.

By "MONEY" you should really be saying "Being able to stay in business and make more games". Its incredibly rare and difficult to make a CRPG that turns a profit. There's been a LOT of high quality CRPGs over the years that lost money. Thats why not many of them get made these days. There aren't that many folks out there willing to spend tens of millions of their money just to support our hobby. They want a return on their money, same as you want with yours.

Good grief you put the tin-foil hat on "They're all out to get us!"

Just do a tiny bit of research. It's a cut-throat business and it's hard to even survive let alone make huge profits.

Whether it's greed or not is irrelevant. Every business is out to make a buck and if MMO, DLC (or whatever) is where the money is at then that's where they are going to focus their efforts.

Most MMO's try to be RPGs, but they fail miserably because, as others have pointed out, everyone is the hero. Although there are thousands of people in the world, they're all the ONE hero who has 'saved the world' or slain the monster or whatever. It falls flat.

I think the only MMO that actually pulled off being an RPG was 'Dark Age of Camelot'; at least with the realm war aspect (as opposed to the PvE game which was just like all the other games). In the realm war, you weren't the ONE TRUE Unique hero just like everyone else. You were simply a warrior fighting for your realm. You did this by protecting it's entry points (the realm walls), it's castles, and it's relics. Or by invading other realms. Your foes were other players. And it was a blast. Heck, one of my favorite memories was successfully defending a keep against the superior forces of Galroth, a much feared player, because of the tactics I devised. At least until Mythic screwed up and diluted everything into mediocrity. Anyways, you can't do that in a single player RPG because, well, it's single player. But DAoC was the only game I know of to do multiplayer right. The rest are basically just single player games with lots of people running around in them.
