Which weapon is the most effective in Grunt's hands; the Geth Plasma shotgun or the researchable Krogan Claymore? Because I've found even though the Mattock does more damage he is much better with the Collector's Assault Rifle.

With normal AI behaviour, the GPS is more effective due to its range. However should he ever get into close with enemies, the Claymore beats out anything. That said, Grunt ca soak up enough damage to survive such onslaughts, so I always give him the Claymore and order him straight into one dudes face and so forth.
He's devestating!

Use the M-22 Eviscerator. your squad mates have a longer range with weapons then Shepard does. Heck they are able to shoot at enemies at long range with the tempest with the same accuracy that you would normally have when using the Locust. With the M-22 Eviscerator it makes it even more deadly.

^This.
I'd rather more lead in the air than the (outside) possibility of one shot kills. GPS is good for range but given Grunt has an Assault Rifle, this isn't the same issue you face with Jack, etc.

Grunt always ends up charging somebody anyways so long range isn't that useful for him. I prefer to give him the claymore and inferno ammos and let him do his thing. On husk missions, he could clean the level without Shep's help... Even scions don't stand a chance against the almighty krogan charge ! Claymore = more charges = more ''I AM KROGAN'' = win

It is only useful on husk centric missions and his loyalty mission, or any other mission where the majority of enemies get close up.

But when it comes to most missions in the game the Evisterator is better for him. For he can't charge enemies that are shooting him from afar. Heck on insanity if he tries to charge someone he will most likely get shot down by enemies that are away from his current target. Which is why the Eviserator is better. Mainly cause when he does charge an enemy he would have weakened them enough with the long ranged shotgun that they would go down faster after being hit with his charge giving him more time to get into cover.

It depends on how you play. Most of my builds have a shotgun and try to get close and personal in every fight, that's where Grunt comes in handy. If i plan to shoot things from afar, I just don't bring him or switch him to his AR if it is just for one fight in the mission.

it doesn't matter how you play....whether your a soldier or a vanguard the party AI pretty much acts the same.

But isn't that why Grunt has an assault rifle? If range is a problem, give him the Vindicator or the Mattock. From my experience, the AI really isn't too stupid; if Grunt can't reach the enemy with his charge, he won't charge.

Then again, I play as an infiltrator (I always end up going as the "rogue", no matter what game I play), so the really troublesome long-range enemies aren't much of a threat anyways. I bring along close-range combatants to fill the gap and provide crowd control, so Tali, Jack and Grunt are gold for me.

I'd say, give the Eviscerator to the other shotgun-wielding NPCs--especially the weaker ones like Tali and Jack who rely on their powers more than their combat prowess, as it allows them to remain farther back and still provide a good support role. For Grunt, who has an abominable amount of health along with Fortitude and usually ends up charging somebody anyways, go for the Claymore.
