I am having a well reported problem with Mass Effect 2 - my PC powers off during the game.
I played the first few missions, no problems then suddenly - whammo - i can't go any further.

PLEASE DO NOT SIMPLY REPLY WITH A STANDARD TEMP/FAULTY PSU POST

I am an enthusiast builder and have done extensive testing of my system.
I am still, however, unable to locate the nature of the problem.

Let me fill you in:
Asus P5n 32-e SLI PLUS
Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
4Gb DDR2 800
GTX 275 896 Mb
SB Xtreme Gamer
2 x WD raptors in Raid 0
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
All drivers (mobo, gpu, sound, dx, bios, windows etc) fully updated
The game is downloaded version, patched to 1.02, no mods.
The crash occurs during the Archangel mission - i have saved him and am fighting our way out.

I have checked all temps with a variety of tools and all are in normal ranges.
I have run Furmark and fully stressed out the GPU without errors.
I have run Memtest overnight again, without errors.
I have physically tested the PSU and it is working fine.
I have cleaned my case of dust and checked that all fans are working.
I have checked every connection in the case and made sure nothing is loose.
I have checked the hard drive and raid status and all is fine.
I run many other games at full specs without issue including Dragon Age Origins and 2, Crysis 2, Bad Company 2, Assassins Creed Brotherhood, Fallout New Vegas.
I have also run the game with Game Booster active, which stops all non-essential programs from running.
I have played the game all in lowest specs.
The shutdown can occur straight after a fresh boot after the pc has been off overnight.

I am about to:
Reseat the CPU with new thermal paste.
Run prime95 to stress the CPU
Run 3dmark11

Please, please, please - is there anything more anyone can think of doing?
Have i left out any info or tests?
This is so annoying, i am loving this game but it is unplayable atm.

Does it happen in the same exact location everytime or does it happen at a random place in the mission?? Can you play/replay a different mission and have the issue not happen??

If it is the location then it sounds like a corrupt game file, so either running an error checking program or uninstall, delete dl file and re-download and reinstall off new dl MAY fix the issue. Making sure viral protections and firewall don't interfere and corrupt the new file.

I don't see an issue needing resetting the CPU if you have run temp monitors and the temps are in range. As another note, do you have DirectX 9.0c installed and has it by any chance been corrupted, it is my understanding the 9.0c is required to play the game, and 10 and 11 versions are NOT compatible enough to run the game without bugs.

It may be some dust in your pc, try to clean it as much as you can. Your ddr2 memory may be damaged, try running some tests with memtest.
There is an another option, the problem I used to have some time ago. Your PSU fan might be broken. My pc had just kept powering off at any game. When I decided to investigate, psu fan was not spinning although my pc was on, few seconds later it began to burn so I had to unmount it quickly. Those are just hints for you. Maybe one of them helps you.

Games cannot access the hardware to create a "Reset" signal, but a failing power supply sends such signals purely incidentally to warn you it's about to go up in a cloud of stinking smoke and a shower of sparks, and it just may blow out a lot of good parts when it goes.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

@mcsupersport: thx, will d/l again and try from scratch. I didn't consider a corrupt install/save.

@gorath: does this mean that even though a PSU tester is giving positive results that a PSU may be on it's way out anyway? As in it ain't broke yet but is close enough?

Hardware is the *ONLY* source for a hard restart or power down without a Blue Screen. A BSOD is a far different symptom than those, and no one should EVER permit an automatic reboot with one of those. The most common reason is the power supply just doesn't provide the amps required, and you need a multimeter setup to test for that. The common $10 PSU testers merely affirm that some kind of current at the correct voltage flows, now how strong that current is.

The other ordinary reason a system shuts itself down is seriously overheated parts that are protecting themselves from being fried, and the least common vector is a bad capacitor on the mainboard.

That makes the issue a lot clearer - cheers Gorath Alpha

I have order a new PSU (Corsiar AX1200 gold)
A bit of overkill for my current system but i am due to upgrade later this year

Hopefully this solves my issues - will update regardless

Thanks again guys for all your help

Corsair sells excellent Power Supplies. Write the date you start using it on the outer shell with a felt-tip marker, and accept the natural decay of its components. You lose roughly 10% of capacity a year, so if you have a requirement for 22 Amps for the graphics, for instance, and the new PSU offers 35, it will have fallen to 23 Amps in only four years of use.

Gorath you are frikn legend! Cheers bud, the new PSU did the trick. Playing for hours crash free. Never considered PSU stability and decay given that the tester came in positive. Thanks for the detailed response. HOW MUCH DOES ME2 ROCK!!!

That means your PC is overheating. Your computer shuts itself off in order to save itself from damage. If it happens a lot, it's just as damaging.

Dust out your PC, maybe find a new cpu fan or something.

Oh, already fixed :( Not that my help would have done anything. I should really read the first post more thoroughly.
