Many enemies are immune or resistant to fire damage?

Okay, so I have played 2 mages so far and it's always seemed to me like Fire was a wasted element.  The first time I went full Elemental while Anders had full Primal... and I found that my mage's firespells were rather useless most of act 2 and 3.  So many rage demons and dragons and so few humans by comparison.  Am I misinterpreting things?  Most times I found Primal spells to be much more effective for most enemies versus the fire Elemantal spells.  I don't like my mages getting up close much so Cone of Cold was totally wasted on my mage for the most part.

Can some people who spec full Elemental explain how they manage with the demons and Xebenback and the Pride Demon in act 3 and the dragons?!  I plan to do a third mage and I want to do Force mage, but I don't know if I want to waste points on Elemental much versus Primal.  Even though I'm kind of super used to the Primal spells by now and I'd love to play something different... I just don't know what.

Thank you.

Might sound stupid, but what's wrong with switching to cold? You still get the nice bonus from Elemental Mastery, and there's +cold% trinkets. I'm sure how to interpret your question, unless you expected no elemental resistance?

With the bonuses you get for fire damage (and to a lesser extent cold damage), you don't need to switch to the weakest elemental resistant all the time.

EDIT: Nothing wrong with getting into the thick of it as a mage. You're not as fragile as you might think you are, especially if you take Blood Mage as a second spec so you'lll have to pump up constitution anyway.

LOL.  Sorry, I was not clear.
It's not that I'm afraid for my poor mage to get into the thick of things and get squashed, that's not it at all.
The problem is I like playing mages far off into the distance raining AOE or controlling the battlefield.  I'm a ranged type player, that's all.  Cone of cold is awesome and a life saver at times when a rage demon gets close, but I don't like having my mage in the thick of things.  So my point was that it seemed to me that the real AOE damage dealing spells in Elemental are fire based and it seemed to me like they were rather ineffective during the battles that I consider more difficult.  Rage demons/dragons are a pain and shooting fire at them makes it even more of a pain.  While primal tree seemed to serve me quite well with normal mobs of humans, while still being quite good against demons and dragons.

Those are/were my impressions of the fire spells.  I know some people love them and spec in them and I want to know how they deal with the demons and dragons, do they use other spells or do they just forget about the fire AOE and do Cone of cold and such?  I don't like playing in the thick of battle if I can help it, so if the only solution to demons/dragons is Cone of cold, then I'll forget about elemental tree for the most part (maybe get just the cold spells) because it's not my type of play and primal is more than satisfying for mobs to me.

If people mix some other spells from other trees that are good for demons/dragons and fire-resistant enemies, I would like to hear what those are.  Again, ranged spells if possible.

Hope I explained better this time.

PS: I miss the ice storm of Origins :(

Personally I like primal, but not for the damage, but because it looks freakin awesome.. As for elemental I do indeed like it, it gives you two elements to play with instead of just one. And its very helpful when you are PC is a  mage. When I play a mage I keep at least one other mage with me and one of us is ALWAYS elemental.. the other of course primal.

I like having a diverse choice in elements. Easier to cover weaknesses this way.. plus humans are really easy to set fire too.. act 2 and 3 still have plenty of humanoids to burn.

I also keep 2 points in creation so we both have the heal.   Other then that, elemental / primal mages.

EDIT again : P   If I only keep one mage I usually double spec.. I get both lightning AOE, both fire, both ice, and the rest (since its anders obviously)  into his own tree for heals.  . after that i put stuff deeper in the specs for extra damage and what not.

However thats just personal preference.

EDIT: Oh and i always ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS keep extra staffs.. at LEAST one of each element  that way if I fight fire demons I can switch to ice staff if I don't want to run up and use cone of cold those staves do some serious dmg in this game

Oh and that funny DOING sounding spell that makes everyone forget about you... or is SUPPOSE to make everyone forget about you.. Never works for me I end up tanking half the mobs as a mage anyway.

Next to Firestorm and Tempest there aren't any big AoE spells in DA2, and most of the time, the battlefield is significantly smaller, too. The combat environment has changed, and so should our playstyles.

Since you want to go Force Mage on your next playthrough, you will find Gravitic Ring a big help, since you can keep enemies locked down, and do damage to them from a distance. Chain Lightning will be nicer since everyone is close; upgraded Winter's Blast is AoE, although the area is really small; Walking Bomb is amazing. Not wanting to get close is something you will simply have to do if you want to exploit brittle with an archer.

But again, no sense in wishing for things from the past. What I described are just a few of the ways to cope with crowds.

Not specific to Rage Demons as this will apply to any Elite, but the name of the DA2 game is CCC. Use it. Exploit it. Love it. :)

Yeah, I pretty much have a million and one staffs at all times, LOL. Even when I play rogue or warrior, I tend to play 2 mage parties so both Anders and Merrill with me most of the time.
*sigh* Pretty much staffs were my answer with my first mage who was elemental.
Since I like force mage, there's rarely enough points to get both, but I guess across 2 mages one can be Elemental and one Primal.
