Since Shapeshifter is not really useful I was thinking about a mod to change it into a Summoner instead, almost the same, except it summons a beast instead of shapeshift you into a beast.

This way you can still do your magic, but also make use of that specialization. What you summon will have to be brainstormed, of course. You can give ideas here.

I am thinking of Spirits or Demons. I would have preferred both but I'm not sure you can use 2 lines of talents for specializations.

EDIT: Changed topic to Summoning School for Mages instead, since it would be more logical to add another school of magic instead of a specialization.

Problem with this idea is it already exists (Ranger).

In fact, the ranger summons are almost the exact same as the shapechanges.

What they should have done is just make the shapechanges more powerful monsters such as drake/dragon (not high dragon obviously)

True enough, summoning could perhaps be added as a whole tree under any mage. It's probably a whole lot easier too now that I think about it.

I think summoning is a great idea! Would it create problems with the max party limit of 4 characters?

The game does talk about the less often seen benevolent spirits of the fade. If you created a whole tree, I think it would be neat to have lines for Fade Demons, Fade Spirits, and Incorporeal Undead.

It is possible to have a summon without interfering with the party limit, it would work just like the Ranger's summon.

If it has its own tree then the most logical would be 4 lines:
Animal
Spirit
Demon
Undead

Hmmm, this would really be a fun mod :wizard:

There is a demon summoning thing for Blood Mages in the projects section.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that. Although I feel it shouldn't be limited to only demons as I think you should be able to use it even for both good and evil characters alike.:innocent:

Maybe, but I feel like animals should belong to Rangers, and demons to blood mages.  Regular mages should get their own summoning line.

There are mods already for this. Some are simple 2da overrides (Ranger, Shapeshifting), others have added an entirely new specialization.

The problem is that in the world of Dragon Age, there is no such thing as summoning. No teleportation, magical summoning or creation-from-thin-air.

While I don't think shapeshifting was useless at all (use up all your mana? turn into a bear until it comes back, then since your health is low and mana is full turn into bugs and heal heal heal while you kill kill kill) a summoning tree would be cool.

But not spirits or demons. That's more of a necromancy thing and while that is technically summoning. I'd rather summon monsters, the Ents and other stuff like that.

Well, there must be, since demons come out of thin air.

I'd definitely like to see a dedicated Necromancer spec built around undead summoning. The current "animate dead" spell is so situational and costly, it is largely useless for being a tier 4 ability.

Does no one else think this will overpower mages as the best tank, dps, cc and healer?

The other thing is, I think I read somewhere that if you had 2 rangers in your party only one pet was allowed at a time.

So having a summoning mage (yet another sustainable for mages yay!) would remove the additional dps a ranger gets from their pet. Which I think they probably need more since a lot of talents/skills are often used to lockpick, steal and stealth.

Well it's game law that blood mages Can summon Demons.

NPC do it and one of the few ways(the only revealed Way) that Blood Mages are legal is if there grey wardens yet are PC can not do it as NPC Blood mages are happily summoning.

They should make a extra school available to blood mages as that what the Codex said they have.

It's a specialist that gains access to forbidden summoning spells along with there specialist ability.

What annoying is the game dose it that way for your enemys.

As for Shapeshifters there powerful but only if leveled to max and only if you install the dragon age mutator pack http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=166 for instant shift change or forget about it as your shape shifter tries to shift and the Npc beat you to death as 30 seconds go by as you shift and are helpless and hopeless and useless with a big target on your head saying please kill me lol .

Abomination would be a fine new shape shift class if you wear going to switch it. 4 stages of the transform.Very different from a ranger. and you could be a abomination/blood mage.
With a full desire demon for the end form. It's been revealed in game that many Abomination are not that bad and leave the mage in charge of the body else fully merge into the personality like Flemeth and even goodie to shoes Wynne. Heck they even shape shift back in game. And there even a few times wear you could offer your own body to free some one else in game.

Speak of the devil
found these mods http://social.bioware.com/project/818/ for shapeshifter dose demon looks cool

and

here the wonderful bloodmage one http://social.bioware.com/project/711/
