I like Loghain, Alistair is such a whiny child the way he just walks out on you for sparing a man's life.
What happens if you let Loghain (spoiler)?

Funnily enough I always spared Loghain. Maybe that's because I never really could befriend Alistair.
"Hey Alistair, you aren't dumb, it was a good choice..."
Alistair approves (+1)
"I'm sorry Al, there was no other option..."
Alistair disapproves (-25)
Really, you can tell him whatever you want, if you're lucky you get a +3 approval. You make one bad choice and you get a huge minus. He is quite selfish, even though he doesn't appear so. I respect Loghain and with him I got more approval in the last part of the game than I did with Alistair for 90% of it. If I just had a chance of really becoming a good friend of his, then I would consider killing Loghain, but that needs too much. One false decision and you're screwed. Maybe that's different when you are female and you romance him, but damnit, just being a friend is hard. Loghain was at over 75% approval at the end, a point Alistair never reached.
And no, I don't really complain, I just love Bioware for creating so many different characters with real personality. The selfish Alistair who appears to be a do-gooder. When he said in the end that now he wants to be king, I though what the ****? 'Tis real entertainment this game.
