Is there any way to turn off the familiar background sound, and leave all other sounds on? I have a pixie familiar to open locks, but the damned non stop bells are driving me absolutely spare.

Post this question in either the Toolset forum or the Scripting forum since it is not a technical issue related to running the game. It will probably involve adding an override of some sort to change or remove the soundset of the default pixie and will likely affect all pixies, not just the familiar. If you are asking if there is some adjustment in the game options or via ini to alter individual soundsets, the answer is "no".
