So for my second playthorugh I'm doing a Female Hawke Rogue because that seems fitting. The problem is making a Hawke look pretty without her looking like a damn clown.

I dont understand makeup (Because I shouldnt lolol) but are there rules to makeup? an example being: Blush and lipstick match, certain eye colors look good with a certain color.

I dont want to ask any of my friends IRL because that would be awkward lol, so was hoping if the Bioware community would help out!

Thanks in advance :D

If you have access to the Black Emporium, the mirror of transformation will allow you to experiment and/or correct mistakes.

Are there rules to make up? sure. There are rules for everything, written and unwritten, but for the same reason you neglect to ask you rl friends the same applies here. Who cares what "we" as the bioware community thinks what your character looks like? The most important opinion in this matter is yours, and yours alone.

The rule to makeup is: don't look like a ****.  Or so I'm told.  And the rule of thumb for guys who don't want to end up with the HIV if a night goes that way.  Like me.  Or any various sort of diseases related to the act, for that matter. :bandit:

edit: Well, it censored that.  Think of the farming implement, then work backwards and expand upon it until you get the word.  Hint: sort of synonym of adulteress.

what might potentially help is just google-imaging either some random celebrity you want to base your hawke on or if you don't want to do that (I normally don't) just google make-up or something and copy the colourings (lipstick/blush) etc. from some random with similar skin tones and eye colours. I think thats the main part. I too don't and shouldn't understand makeup properly but from my limited knowledge it's something about certain colours matching certain eyecolours and skin colours.

The best advice I can think of would probably be to just not put too much of anything - too much makeup is how you end up looking like a clown. Of course in some cases (e.g. dark eyeshadow) it may work so it's completely up to your digression.

You need to figure out if your Lady Hawke has a warm or cool skin tone and then base your colors on that. This might help.

Well if you really want some help - here's what Momma told me when I was a girl.

Less is more!

To be safe choose black/grey eye make up and make it reasonably light. Use blush sparingly and in natural tones don't worry about matching lipstick, as it can lead you to clown land. Blush is supposed to make you look naturally flushed not coloured in - so skin tone is important. Pick whatever coloured lipstick you like (except blue....only dead people have blue lips...) and play with the slider until it looks pretty.

In general for blondes use pink tones, redheads choose more warm tones like bronzes and browns, brunettes can get away with just about anything but rose is always pretty.

Hope this helps.

PS - If you don't like the options available and are on the PC go to Nexus and download some of the amazing skin and cosmetics mods and embrace your feminine side!

My rule of thumb, decide on what feature you'd like to emphasize and stick to that. If you want to emphasize eyes, don't choose bright lips or cheeks. If you want to emphasize the mouth, tone down the other areas. As for colors, I tend to go with smoky eyes and earth tones for lighter skins and richer colors for darker skin. Have fun!

Welcome to our world, dude.  lol

The makeup sliders are... kinda awful.  It goes from non-existent to neon for the eyes, for example.  I prefer subtlety, so I stick closer to non-existent.  Darker colors for darker skin tone.  If you're not sure, a neutral or greyish shade.  Otherwise sometimes it looks nice if you match eye color to eyeshadow color.  Not something I'd do irl, but in the game it's a nice accent.  Example.  My rogue has blue eyes, and I used blue eyeshadow with a low slider.  You don't see the blue shadow much, it just sort of highlights her eyes- I thought, anyway.

Another thing I do is to go one or two shades darker on the eyebrows than on the hair.

There's really no set way to do things.  You have to experiment a little.  Not all lighting will be kind, no matter what you choose- just like RL.  :)

I tend to gothify my female Shepard, and did something similar with Lady Hawkes. Its easier that way than trying to pass off rouge and and light pink lipstick on a 2 handed warrior.

Here's a tip that I know many people make the mistake of in real life... less is always more. A certain lip color / cheek color / eye color might look good when you're looking at that specific part of the face, but from far away, when you see the whole face, you can think "oh cripes, what the f*ck?"

What I would do is avoid going any further than 6/10 of the way for "makeup intensity" on the character creation screen. However, choose colors first by moving the sliders to 100 percent intensity. For lip/cheek colors, usually matching is an easy way to do it--use darker reddish browns for the darkest skin tones, more orangy-red colors for the middle, and pinks for the light skin. For eyes, you can really do whatever you want. Just remember to avoid going past 6/10s.

EDIT: colors are based on what would look most natural. These are the colors I would be using when painting a portrait or applying makeup myself. :P

Unless you are looking for a dramatic theatrical look, stick to neutrals ( light to medium ranges in the browns or greys for eyes, colours much like a real-life blush for the cheeks and close to the lip colour for the mouth.)  the application and colours used here in da2 don't work well for looking "pretty" if not used very carefully  =) So if it isn't neutral, go bold and unrealistic, or go home. Shadows: Brown shadow brings out blue eyes, blue/greens bring out brown. violet brings out green but that can also make you look sick and tired too in game so.... not all RL makeup rules apply here :)

A general rule though is IF you are going to go bold, pick either lip, or eyes. Not both.

Of course, every now and then it is great to break a rule too. =) Sometimes it works.

I stopped trying to go for pretty though, and went for a "character" thing instead. Not realistic, but it says something about the character each time :) Like my crazy warrior girl in the profile with the cat eyes and plain mouth. Totally unrealistic, but it suits her nuttiness and her attitude, she is one tough biotch when it counts :) Demure would use neutrals and gloss, light pinks etc as wash ( those light colours do NOT look good as anything but a 0-10% overlay, if you want it even remotely realistic.

The Black Emporium mirror is your friend. And much of the lighting that isn't cinematic in this game, won't be terribly flattering for most brighter colours either.

And here I thought I was the only one who applied real world makeup tips to the character generator... Posted Image

Can't really add much advice here that wasn't already given, but will agree that the Mirror at the emporium is a wonderful thing. If only ME2 did something similar with that overpriced plastic surgery unit you could research.

Use the default, pre-cosmetized female Hawke?

I also use the Charcter Generator and BE Mirror a lot, but it usually has more to do with altering looks between lengths of time, making adj to really ugly cutscenes, and getting that facial hair just so....

My opinion is that these women would not be wearing a lot, if ANY makeup. But it's good to give them some color because they have been outside a lot, so probably wouldn't be too pale (unless you really want that). Best thing is to leave those sliders alone, then go to the Black Emporioum where you can test it without spending a lot of time re-loading!

I prefer subtle, too, but think they do need something.  It's more like stage makeup- you need something there just to look healthy.

I was struck by how some NPCs had the sliders on full: neon pale pink lips, garish green eyeshadows, etc.

I know that when I tried my hand at a custom female Hawke, I would set the slider to full in order to discern color. Perhaps it was not reset to a lighter shade?

My Hawkes are usually dark-skinned, so I tend to go for the black eye make-up. I usually concentrate more on eye make up than any other sort though, to make them stand out.

A lot of what works depends on skin tone/hair colour. Pink for instance is not such a good colour for red heads but looks better on blondes. It's hard to tell in the creation though just how vivid the make up is. I had to go back to the Black Emporium frequently.
