If Mass Effect 4 had to be a different game genre, what would you prefer ?

a cheesy 1980's NES-style rpg would work!

Or a sandbox free roaming action game like GTA.

Almost completely the opposite of the Mass Effect trilogy. NOT another canned rather pre-defined story that boxes you into it's confines because the team don't have to worry about any save game nonsense and in sharp contrast to the rather claustrophobic environments and damn right crazily linear narrative/path progression of the ME trilogy.
I personally wouldn't care to see a RTS, or MMO. Especially if farmed out to someone else. Not interested in that one bit.

Some rpg elements such as customizable weapons/armor. Dialgoue wheels. Include the ability to use stealth, ie crouching/hiding in shadows. Choose from a variety of races to play.

An open-world sandbox game set on a massive sprawling alien world like Palaven or Thessia, etc. Set Before Humans arrived in the galaxy. In other words your story [not Shepard's]. Open-ended, tons of player freedom, customization, vehicles and exploration; play as yourself rather than some pre-define character; no vo - you play whoever you want to be (of whatever species) and you play how YOU would want to with different factions (to affiliate with).

Damn good idea. I especially agree with you about the path of ME triology being too damn linear.

Now the first thing that must be done is make sure the movie is massive, and not at all connected to Shepard's story. not First Contact War either. A part of me hopes the movie is after the reaper threat and introduces a lot of new iconic characters that will draw more people into the series. If the movie is a massive hit than Mass Effect will be the next big thing.
I don't want just one new game after 3. If the movie is successful enough, and so if 3 then there could be a ton of new games.
An MMO, a single player game, and maybe heck I'm just going to say it.
Bioware is part of EA, and we already know EA companies are close. What if there was a Sims game set in the Mass Effect universe? Just for the laughs. Nothing serious, and not a change in the franchises course. Just a side game made by another company where we can have elcor farms with no toilets. It would be funny.

No, wait, they got that covered....
Epic RPG!
Nope, nevermind, that's completely covered...
Adventure game!
Then again, that falls in with the RPG element...
Fighting game!
Wait, nevermind...
A tactical shooter!
Well, now that I think about it, that's covered...
A Driving game with high speed races and pursuits!
O wait, they covered that in DLC...
A Vehicle Shooter!
Oops, forgot, they covered that in DLC too...
A strategy game!
Well, I think they got the 'strategy' part covered...
A game that has some puzzles!
Ah, nevermind. Just found that in-game...
Movie game?
O yea, forgot, Mass Effect movie was announced...
So ummm..... Idk? Chess?

(First Contact War campaign .. you choose Human or Turian side)
(Rachnai Wars campaign .. you choose Rachnai or Krogan)
(Krogan Rebellions campaign .. you choose Krogan or Turian)
In each you create and control a captain character or its equivalent and command several platoons ... you can issue orders to your units via an RTS view .. then switch to TPS view and join the action ... there can even be two modes for the Strategy part .. RTS mode and a mode in which you pause the battle .. issue commands to all your units .. then unpause and let their AI handle the rest ... of course there is also limited base building and economy .. although not like SC or typical RTS economy .. more like Ground Control.
All that mixed with some roleplaying and decisions ME style (it won't change the final outcome of the war but will affect your character and all the NPCs around .. who lives .. who dies .. sacrifice civilians to protect military operation or vice versa .. etc etc).

FPS is the only other thing I play.
Does bioware even have FPS?
From what I've played, they do TPS.
EDIT: Accidentally submitted too early...
I'm totally down for a Bioware FPS, though. I think they could do it well. I think a pre-qual would be great, IMO. Rachni wars or first-contact wars... or even the prothean/reaper annihilation.

-Possibly an Xcom/Jagged Alliance type game, strategic small squad combat, some exploration, finding new tech, research trees, stuff like that.
