I didn't experience the lack of depth by playing a different race. It was, too me, stamped all over the game as you went. My second play through was a female city-elf, and let's just say, she got toss to the way-side by Alistair because all of a sudden he was too good for a lowly elf. Then to top it off, Morrigan announces it's time to sleep with her ex. Elves got dumped on continously in the game.
? Alistair only dumps a non-noble if he isn't hardened. He treates mages the same as dwarves or elfs, and I don't recall race specific dialogue. I have no idea what you're talking about with the Morrigain thing, since Morrigain comes to you and you have to convice Alistair for the DR.
Well, it's implied enough that the future king cannot marry an elf. The Morrigan thing was just thrown in their to add insult to injury. I should explain that my city elf sacrifriced herself in the end for a perfect tragedy.
But there are plenty of instances throughout the story that elfs are looked down upon. Quite a few npcs reacted negatively towards the elf warden at first contact. So playing a non-human character does make the game seem different as you play it. Heck, Loghain especially at the end had no sympathy for the elves.
