Playing Origins for the second time, now with a human warrior (tank and heavy hitter thanks to Blightblood sword), Morrigan (arcane artillery), Wynne (healing, buffing, debuffing), and Leliana to deal with locks and traps until I find Zevran to replace the gal.

For first playthrough as a duel-wielding rogue, I went with Alistair as tank, Morrigan as crowd-control/damage and Wynn. They far out-classed the other group builds I tried. Only problem is I had to go back to multiple dungeons with Leliana just to loot the place. Draining.

This playthrough, I'm a mage so Morrigan won't need to come along as often. Alistair will remain my tank, and Wynn as healer. The fourth party member will be swapped in and out depending on the area and dialogue/RP-ing reasons that I missed out on first time around (ie. Shale for the Deep Roads). And I must admit I've downloaded the lock bash mod, to save the frustration of the lock picking issue ^_^

wynne, alistair, leilana. first time playing as arcane warrior and it is just insane. in reality wynne and i can take out anything and everything, dont need a warrior at all. leilana is there to open chests. i use oghren, shale etc whenever they are needed for plot.

Yes, arcane warriors are awesome.  They will do just fine on their own in combat, especially after getting shimmering shield and having decent mana regen to keep it up at all times.

For me Wynne is necessary in all situations make of that what you will.
The others can be picked and chosen at will really, though if i'm not on my Rogue character then i have to take Leliana.
Can't stand Ogrehn myself always eject him from the party as soon as i'm out of the. ahem place you get him.
Not bothered what tank i have, though sadly i find the dog the weakest kind because it can't threaten. which is a shame because i think the dog is the most fun character from the tankers.

Morrigan is capable enough as a debuffer, so she's indispensible for boss fights but otherwise she's not as effective as myself as mage. Also because it's near impossible to tell what her reaction is to any event i don't like taking the negative approval everytime i want to help someone.

First runs:
2H Warrior: Leliana, Wynne and Al
DW Assasin/Duelist Rogue: Leliana, Wynne and Al(STR rogue, figured late that i could have been lockpicker too)
SH/AW Mage: Leliana, Zevran and Al

2nd run
Ranger Rogue: Leliana, Zevran and Wynne (Team Ranger w/ 3 wolves, just for the fun)
Blood Mage: not done yet, but thinking Al, Sten and Ogren
DW Warrior: not done yet, but thinking Zevran, Al and Shale. Expecting a LOT of injury.

Ranger team was fun. I wish went 3 DW daggers with Team Ranger but i feared running out of daggers, So the Leliana in that team is an archer. Scatter shot + master stealth = an extra 2-3 back stabs per rogue. Not lvl 20 yet but if i get 3 spiders it "could be" backstab heaven not counting the all stun, cold and paralyze spells the mage will dish out. Going to test my mettle on high dragon soon.

I tend to shuffle them around a lot, depending on the missions I set off to. I never have a constant party setup, except for the "old school" version: Me, Leliana, Alistair and Morrigan.

Usually, I go with the "one Warrior, one Rogue, one Mage and one whatever you want" system, but last time it was complicated, since I was the tank warrior, Alistair was "converted" to dual-wield DPS (VERY effective!), so he was kind of half-rogue, half-warrior. (Boy, the things he does with axe and dagger...) Then Wynne or Morrigan as I felt necessary, and then either another warrior or another rogue (usually the latter).

But I also did something with me, Alistair, Sten, and Oghren, just out of curiosity, and it worked too.

You can equip one or more with axe/dagger, I read somewhere it's even more effective (I don't remember exactly, someone did all the calculations on the forum, I think it's better armore penetration and damage (axe) vs. better attack (dagger) for either CUN or DEX based rogues... but number crushing is hardly relevant for the game anyway) Anyway, this is what I did after a while with my DW NPCs.

AI: Dual-Wielding Rogue
Alistair: Tank/Mage-Killer
Morrigan: Crowd-Control/Healer (though found I barely needed healing with this set-up)
Shale: Just does awesome things -------> Occasionally replaced by Dog for the lols
Sometimes I would have Leliana come in as a ranged archer as needed instead though.

NEVER had Wynne as a permanent fixture as the dialogue between her and Alistair made me borderline suicidal.

The "you should learn about where babies really come from." dialogue, the "don't scratch it!" one or the one with "could you mend my sock"? Or perhaps the "when you wake up beside me tomorrow morning..." one?

I like ranged combat. It feels kind of stupid to run voluntarily to your death. I am more of a tactician and avoid close combat whenever I can. So, I usually have Leliana (archer), Morrigan and Wynne. If another character is forced in the party then Leliana gently moves aside. ;)

In all my 2 playthroughs, I tried to create something that would stand against any situation:

1- a Mage for combat
2- a Mage for healing
2- a Tank
3- Leliana

I've been playing mainly as an Arcane Warrior:
Alistair: back up tank/crowd control
Morrigan: glass cannon type of damage dealer
Leliana: for chests and decent damage

I've played as a two hander and had the same exact lineup.

When I had a rogue, my party consisted of Alistair to Tank, Leliana for traps/ranged DPS, and Morrigan/Wynne, depending on if I thought I'd need more healing or killing.

My typical party builds are 2 tanks, Mage, Rogue or Tank, Mage, 2 Rogues. That meant usually Alistair, Zevran & Wynne with Shale flipped out for whichever class I was playing.

Hmm team ranger with 3 archers.... sounds dangerous.  Wonder if Zevran can even go archer build.

BTW, did not max ranger talents, wolves seemed fine.  Any advocates for bear/bearkarn, blight wolf and whatever the spider becomes?  Wondering if its worth another 3 talents per ranger.

On my last playthrough as a 2h warrior dwarf, I usually had Alistair tanking, Morrigan/Wynne for damage/cc/healing, and Leliana for support and lockpicking.

The game is very forgiving when it comes to "weird" party/player builds.

Anyone ever tried a mage-free party?

On my last playthrough, I wondered if Zevran can go ANY build... =] on the other hand, if you can build Alistair as an (effective) dual-weapon DPS/DEX warrior (as I found out recently), you can build anything in this game...

Nah, always stopped at wolf. Not the best fighter, but a good enough distraction for the enemy to get some nice backstabs where they belong. And they are better-looking than bear or spider...

I'm sure that if you got Zevran early enough you could build him any way you wanted. My first playthrough he specialized in dual weapons, and my second he's a combination of dual weapons and archery.

Not sure how I want to build him in this playthrough yet and I just got him, but I will definitely give him a few points in archery. You don't always know when you'll need a ranged attack.

Actually reloaded the game and got him to be a respectable archer. Could not find more rapid aim gloves though. I could have sworn i saw more..... But anyway yeah, wolves seem to grab enough attention. Even against the spawns around "archie".

morrigan, morrigan and more morrigan.

i can't ever get enough of claudia black's voice acting being a big fan of farscape and stargate sg-1.
thankfully i was able to respec her to spirit healer and take her instead of wynne cuz i gotta have claudia black's voice on my journey hehe.

then aleister, he always manages to crack me up with his sarcasm.

i haven't decided on a permanent fourth. i wish leiliana was a mage and i'd definitely take her.
