In my last run, Isabela was one of the few party members that my femHawke actually enjoyed being friends with despite her lack of honesty towards the small issue of the stolen book.  I'm wondering though, even though I supported her keeping it, was there a way that I could have kept her in my group?  I've hear of people doing this but I wasn't sure what specific things I needed to do to keep her around.

Thanks for all your help!

You need 50 friendship/rivalry, and to have completed her "questioning beliefs" quest

She disappears for a while after you give her the book. Keep playing I won't spoil the rest for you :)

lol, thanks...

I just finished my femHawke run and though fun, it was rather depressing in the end.  I may go back and start another run over just to see how things end up with Isabela in the group.

That's it. If you do it right she'll still leave but come back before the end of act II (won't spoil it more than that)

I think the problem many have is that they don't manage to get to 50% until they make the decision to give her the tome. That's too late. Needs to happen before that to be able to do her 'Questioning Beliefs' quest. Definately worth it to keep her around.

After an Isabella-dependent encounter I found Ambrosia for the first time. If you want to buy your level ups, this is an added benefit.

Ok, I just want to make sure I did this right - please let me know?

My "friendship" with Isabela wasn't maxed but was just about all the way over when I started the quest, "To Catch a Thief."  I sided with here to get that stupid book and like you all said, she was gone after we left the building.  If I understand this correctly, she will return when I have to deal with the Arishok, correct?  Otherwise, I won't see her again?

Jupp, either you will see her again there or she won't come back at all. Hmm.. as long as you're over 50% and did QB it should be good.

QB is the quest you get at the start of ACT 2 where she's playing cards with Merril right?  I remember her talking about how much her life would have been different were she not to have met Hawke.

I got "questioning beliefs" for Isabela AFTER she disappeared. Any ideas how or where to "fix" that? When should I have done s.th. else?
I'd even use console or savegame editor...

If you look in your journal and it says Questioning Beliefs: go and talk to Isabela then that is the right q. Don't remeber how it looked or started     =)

Since the patch (360), the only way I've been able to get Isabela to stay is to make her give the book back to the Qunari. Previously, I was able to give her the book, even with not quite 100% friendship, and she would still come back.

OK, is it just me, or doesn't everyone check in with their companions at the beginning of each act? I've mentioned on here before that I was having issues with Isabela leaving, and people always say, "did you do the Questioning Beliefs beforehand?"...which leaves me confused, because that was so long ago in the Act that I've already forgotten about it. It's one of the first things I do,  doesn't everyone? :)

You have to do the "Questioning Beliefs" quest before you do "To Catch a Thief". "Questioning Beliefs" is triggered when you reach either 50% rivalry or friendship (and you get the respective bonus). You need to restore back earlier and raise her approval rating before doing "To Catch a Thief".

The decision to give the tome back has no effect on whether Isabela returns. You only need to complete the "Questioning Beliefs" quest before "To Catch a Thief". "Questioning Beliefs" is a quest that each companion has, and kicks in twice - once at 50% approval (friendship or rivalry), and once at 100%. All of the 100% QB quests require the completion of their personal quest in act 3. Not all of them require the Act 2 personal quest (Isabela's requires you do it before her personal quest, while Anders requires you to do it after his).
