Could someone please break this down for me with a simple example.
Also comment on wether it's worthwhile/when to use.
Thanks.

Each hit you do adds to the unforgiving chain.
The unforgiving chain is that circle of dots you'll see around the target's thing...
Each hit in the chain stacks 2% crit chance up to 10 times when the circle is complete (and this gives you 20% crit chance).
The explosive strike's damage is based on how many hits in the unforgiving chain there are.
Explosive strike:
Physical damage: 0.9x Base Damage
Physical damage: +0.5x per basic attack in previous chain, up to 10 hits
As you can see, an explosive strike after 10 hits will be a lot more powerful than just using it without any hits. Once upgraded to merciless strike:
Physical damage: +4x vs. STAGGERED targets
Critical chance: 100%
And if the enemy is staggered, you'll do quite a lot of damage (probably the 4th highest damaging rogue talent after assassinate, vendetta, and twin fangs). So it is definately worth getting - especially since you need to get it to get twin fangs which is one of the best dual wield abilities.
The only interesting component is that it may not be best to waste the explosive strike on an almost dead enemy as it will carry over from enemy to enemy (the number of hits) as long as you don't use any abilities (or maybe take too long to attack?) and against enemies that have lots of health as the increased critical chance may work out to increase overall damage.
If you really want an example: pretend base dmg is 50 (haven't played rogue in a while so not sure whether this is possible or not)
without any hits in chain
50*0.9=45
full chain
5.9*50=295
So against a staggered opponnent:
295*4=1180 (+ critical damage modifiers)
tbh i just pulled those numbers out at random,.. don't really know if those multipliers work like that haha.
usually i see ~1000+ dmg though so it's a pretty solid ability. you know you could just get it and test it yourself...

Thanks for this, the examples outline line it all, clears it all up.
Think I was missing seeing the dots stack up also so was a bit in the dark about it.
Cheers

How does one set up tactics to get the AI to use it if given to Isebela? It seems like there isn't a really good way, as it didn't show up in the tactics page after selecting it. (Note to anyone from Bioware who might be reading this: you need to have some sort of specialised custom condition for any ability that doesn't work with the current tactics.)
So anyone got something half decent for getting the AI to make use of this?

As there aren't any tactics that recognise how many hits in the chain there are your best bet is to just set it so
target elite or higher - use for next condition
STAGGERED - use explosive strike
This way you take advantage of the x4 damage. If you micro her you probably can get better results however.
The only way to allow her to use a chained explosive strike through tactics is to get her to only use basic attacks during the explosive strike cooldown (~25s). An example could be
target elite or higher - use for next condition
enemy hp >= 50% - use twin fangs (starts 30s cooldown)
target elite or higher - use for next condition
enemy: ANY - use twin fangs
target elite or higher - use for next condition
enemy STAGGERED - use explosive strike
target elite or higher - use for next condition
enemy: ANY - use explosive strike (starts 25s cooldown)
enemy: target of Isabela - attack
Hopefully, this should allow isabela to use twin fangs (the hp and rank limitations may interfere with this, but I hate wasting abilities on almost dead enemies or critters), then use the explosive strike (hopefully against someone staggered but otherwise just use it to get it on cooldown), then in the 25s before it finishes cooldown she should build up her chain such that when it cools down she should explosive strike an elite with a full chain and do a lot more damage.
Not 100% sure if this will work (pulled it from the top of my head) and I can't be bothered checking what tactics I've actually got in place.. maybe one of the tactics junkies out there will enlighten us
edit: As a side note, just remembered that an upgraded twin fangs has a 20s cooldown. This isn't very helpful really. I suppose a work-around could be to place the twin fangs use immediately after the explosive strike AND some other talent that takes ~5s to complete. Maybe stealth or some threat removal ability like armstice. This could be useful in that isabela won't get swamped by enemies while she's busy building her chain

would be nice if bioware could make some tactic condition for this. it's a pain to micro or trying to find some tactic setup for it...

target elite or higher - use for next condition
STAGGERED - use explosive strike
the order of conditions on the suggested tactics should be reversed as of patch 1. 02
the companions section in the Compedium has examples of how to make a rogue work properly through tactics.
