Ahoy fellows. A rusty old player with a couple of questions to the veterans amongst us:

I've just started a fresh Swashbuckler pc & intend to dual-class to a mage. Would there be any benefit in advancing him further as a thief before switching, or would I be better off training up as a mage a.s.a.p?

I intend to use the character as my party's thief and currently have Open locks & Find traps on 100 each - if memory serves, you don't require them to be any higher. Do correct me if I'm wrong!

Other than that my only concern is the abysmal base thac0: 17 that I have started with. I've not tried a character like this before so I haven't the experience to judge whether this will even be an issue later in the game.

Also, regarding dual-classes in general; is your stronghold based on your initial class, your 2nd or both?

Thanks in advance! ^_^

100 is the maximum you need in open locks and find traps UNLESS you plan to use Simmulacra to open locks and find traps. The advantages you'd get in leveling a swashy further before dualing to mage would be:
- more thieving skills (obviously)
- lower THACO (as per any thief)
- lower AC and added damage at 1/5L due to swashy bonuses
- more weapon proficiences

I'm not sure any of these advantages would be worth the delay of getting your thieving skills back after dualing to mage. From my experience, the reason to dual from thief to mage is to get traps and locks without having a full thief or another character who would have to manage his/her armor all the time to use those skills. For me, I'd want to maximize my primary class (mage) as soon as possible, so I'd dual as soon as I got 100 and 100 in locks and traps.

I'm not sure on the stronghold question, so I'll leave that to someone else.

In general you can get either stronghold of a dual class, although there are a couple of bugs connected with this for certain classes. However, you can only get one of them, i.e. if you want the mage stronghold then reject the opportunity for the thief one if you do this quest first. There are a number of mods there that allow you to have more than one stronghold, e.g. BG2 Tweak Pack.

The BEST level for a Swashbuckler (that fights in melee) to dual is level 10.
If you play more as a mage and just want to open locks/ traps then it is academic.
